The population of the south have just been subjected to the toughest austerity budget that western Europe has seen in 30 years. Yet the tax hikes that targeted the low paid and those on average income actually saw the richest 1% gain! Someone earning only 15,000 euro could be paying nearly 6% more tax but someone whose income is a million will be paying 6% less tax. read full story / add a comment

The union and labor leaders should be leading the battle to defend the right of all of us to know what is in the cables of capitalism. But they are so much part of the system they will not. While continuing to point this out and to build opposition forces to these union leaders in the workplaces and unions we, the left and all activist and anti capitalist forces, have to act ourselves. We should join Anonymous which is coordinating the defense of wikileaks and its funding base. Boycott Mastercard, Visa, Amazon etc. At the same time we should seek to give more of a democratic structure to Anonymous so it can become a more effective and democratic and decision making body, with a leadership which is collective and has depth, and so is better able to replace itself when capitalism can arrest or otherwise remove more of its leaders. read full story / add a comment

SIPTU organiser Teri Cregan has criticised Boots over their tax avoidance of £86 million annually.

The Trade Union official lambasted the company for their, ‘huge tax avoidance when the public and community sector are being hit by all manner of cuts.’

Boots, who recorded over £1bn profit last year, were able to avoid the payment, due to a tax loop hole.

SIPTU are organised in Boots across the north, and are campaigning for dignity and respect in the workplace, and for business to become more ethical in how they deal with their workers and society.

It's cold comfort that yesterday's inhuman budget was the last sting of a vicious, dying government, chilling to realise it was allowed to flourish and pass by the broad mass of the Irish people standing idly by and not engaging in mass protest.? Yesterdays proceedings outside the Dáil were mild, ultra-mild and weak when compared to the mass protests in Greece and France and the fact that the EU/ECB/IMF attacks on our poor, vulnerable, working classes and middle classes, through their willing government catspaws, are far more severe here than the aforementioned countries.? read full story / add a comment
