Hi, On Tuesday 22nd September, members of the National Animal Rights Association will be going to Mayo for the day, to protest Charles River Laboratories. This is part of SHAC's (www.shac.net) 'Operation Liberation' - a special week of action against vivisection breeders. Charles River Laboratories, which is one of the biggest animal testing companies in the world, has two research facilities in Ireland. They are located in: Carrentrila, Ballina, Co. Mayo and Glenamoy, Co. Mayo. Charles River Labs. are a contract testing business, which means they will test anything, on any animal, for a price. They conduct painful, live experiments on animals for the Pharmaceutical, Animal Health, Medical Device, Biotechnology and Food Industries in Ireland. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Anyone contemplating voting No! for the first time in the upcoming Lisbon 2 referendum in Ireland really ought know the name of the candidates to be the first president of the EU. After all it's not a completely done thing that once the Irish get their answer "right", Tony Blair will sweep into the history books. The current chancillor of Germany, Angela Merckel is another leading candidate as are former prime ministers of Sweden and Luxembourg......"anyway"....... Germany is in the news globally at the moment for several reasons. First the fact that last Friday its army ordered an attack by the USAF on a fuel tanker in Afghanistan which resulted in the deaths of over 80 civilians. Second because it is running into elections. Third because its AIDS awareness people have presented a publicity image of Hitler shagging a girlie from behind with the caption "AIDS is a mass murderer". Here follows a miscellany of links in English so you can keep abreast. read full story / add a comment ![]()

SHell was found in contempt of a District Court order last week. The company was found by the judge to have entered common land in Rossport despite having been prohibited from doing so by a 2007 court order. Presumably the judge, when she returns to sentence the company next week, will treat them as harshly as she has treated opponents of the project to install the experimental gas pipeline in North West Mayo. read full story / add a comment

Today the word "communism" is most often associated with the totalitarian one-party states of Soviet Russia or China. Nothing could be further from the anarchist goal of a stateless, free society. So the association of anarchism with communism seems, at first sight, perverse. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A very successful peace conference was held at Shannon airport on Sat 5 Sept 09 for the purpose of highlighting the interconnections between the establishment of a US forward airbase at Shannon airport, the militarisation of Europe, the abuse of Irish neutrality and the Lisbon Treaty. The attendance of over 80 was mainly for Dublin, so it was great to get such a dedicated group of peace activists to Shannon to show them very clearly to extent to which Irish neutrality has been abandoned at Shannon airport and the extent to which Ireland is complicit in the crimes against humanity being committed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. read full story / add a comment ![]()

According to the Swedish "Dagens Nyheter" newspaper's updates in the last two hours, the US military entered a hospital run by the Swedish Committe for Afghanistan this week in pursuit of a patient who according to them held valuable intelligence on the Taliban. This would constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. This newsbreak follows coverage of the strongest statements critical of the NATO strategy so far by the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the meeting of EU foreign ministers held yesterday. Anyone who prizes Irish neutrality or perhaps those who sneer at such a thing, ought know that Sweden is a neutral state. It is unique amongst the neutral states of Europe in that it boasts a highly developed arms industry which indeed is also one of the oldest happily supplying military hardward to all and sundry since before Napoleon. The Swedish share the northern "Provincial Reconstruction Team" with the Finnish under German command. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The McCarthy or “Bord Snip Nua” report on public spending outlined a range of proposed cuts in government expenditure. Of the €5.3b in possible savings, it can be safely said that at least €4b of this (and probably more) targets the working class. Indeed, a full third of the cuts are aimed at pensioners and unemployed. In the private sector, attacks on our class continue in the form of pay cuts, short time and lay-offs. read full story / add a comment ![]()

One of the great problems that people encounter in making up their minds about the Lisbon treaty is that, depending on who you talk to, the treaty can appear to be an altogether different thing. According to those who are campaigning for a Yes vote, it merely serves to tidy up the existing European treaties, with a few changes to allow the EU to function more efficiently. read full story / add a comment |
