Canada's pride lies in the maple leaf, but its shame lies in the annual slaughter of hundreds of thousand baby harp seals. Canada’s baby seal hunt has started and this year it seems to be more vicious and cruel than ever before—the hunters have gone desperate. Every year, baby seals, some just weeks or a couple of months old, have their delicate heads violently smashed in with a club or a sharp pole only to have their fur skinned from their bodies, often whilst fully conscious. This year, yet again, tens of thousands of baby seals will die—but you can stop it. read full story / add a comment

Poster: Cork Launch of Fleeing Vesuvius
cork / anti-capitalism / event notice Sunday March 20, 2011 23:17 by Nickibopp   image 1 image
‎"Purpose in the Age of Uncertainty" is the title of David Korowicz's talk at the Cork launch of Feasta's "Fleeing Vesuvius", this coming Monday lunchtime in the Central Library.

In the just-published North American edition Richard Heinberg describes Fleeing Vesuvius as a "goldmine". It is a rare resource for the dark times ahead; one that allows, not false hope, but a way to face the future with purpose - when the systems as we've known them can no longer provide the road map.

As well as the publication of the North American edition of the book (by New Society Press), a New Zealand/Australian version will be published shortly, proving that Fleeing Vesuvius has both regional and global relevance.

Please pass this event on to your friends and colleagues, thanks. read full story / add a comment

Nazly Hussein speaks from outside the military courts which this afternoon (Friday 12th March) was supposed to address the people the army harrassed and arrested last Wednesday during a brutal attack on those occupying Tahrir Square. Nazly describes how several hundred plain clothes thugs was deployed against people in the square on Wednesday, who set about pulling down tents and beating people up. The army, under the pretence of ‘protecting’ those remaining in the Tahrir then began beating, arresting and electrocuting people within the the pro democracy movement. Over 170 people where arrested, most of whom where later released without charge. Many had been beaten and tortured with electrocution. read full story / add a comment

The UN tonight has just passed a resolution on a no-fly zone over Libya. The resolution was pushed by France and there were 10 votes in favour and five abstentions.

Tonight Gaddafi is saying he will enter the last stronghold of the rebels the city of Benghazi to the East of Tripoli. It is being reported that he says his forces will show no mercy for the enemy. The question now is how fast will the no-fly zonet be implemented and how fast will Gaddafi move? read full story / add a comment

Recent events in Japan and revelations by wikileaks regarding the nefarious and corrupt activities of the nuclear industry working in India should be a wake up call for those considering the arguments of vested interests who are quietly pushing the nuclear agenda in our media. It would certainly be a nice profitable centralised earner for themselves and their friends but a panacea for our future energy woes it certainly ain't! read full story / add a comment
