British prime minister David Cameron gave authorisation yesterday for Apache attack helicopters to start flying into Libya. It is expected that the helicopters will be deployed within 24 hours. Defence analyst Rear Admiral Chris Parry, said in an interview with the BBC this week that , if the Apaches were used for assault operations and in reinforcing the rebels in their attacks on the Gaddafi regime, it "could be seen as an escalation " of the western military intervention . Parry said that the helicopters’ electro-optics and command and control systems were their main strength . The attack helicopters have been used extensively by UK forces in Afghanistan where they have been providing “ deterrence, intelligence and close air support for hours at a time “. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday was a beautiful beautiful day and a very very important one. 10 days after the "Spanish Revolution" kicked off peacefully all over Spain, it has been replicated massively in the homeland of Democracy, Greece. Yesterdat, M25, 20,000 people took to the streets and squares all over Greece... 7,000 alone and absolutely peaceful in Constitution square in athens. They have been inspired by Spain and the simple core idea of the movement; That we have had enough, that we are "indignant", we will not take it any more, its time to stand up, take to the streets, occupy squares, create a "true democracy"... and hope that the Spark of peaceful Revoution spreads all over this little planet... The country yesterday was abuzz with the visit of Obama to Ireland and the mainstream was aglow covering the event. There is no doubt he is popular in Ireland as evidenced by the tens of thousands who queued up and turned out to see him and went through airport type security to get a closer look. I would suppose there are two reasons for this and one is that everyone wants to be seen and associated with success and the other is that Irish people seem to get very proud of their country and want to show it off when important people or visitors in general show up. read full story / add a comment

Croke Park Conference Centre 31st May 8:30am Supported by the United Left Alliance This week a senior engineer told Cork City Councillors that 60% of that city’s water supply leaked out of the system. This situation is repeated up and down the country to one degree or another. However instead of investing the resources needed to repair our water supply as a matter of urgency this government is determined to press on with the crazy strategy of installing water meters in homes that don’t already have one. This is estimated to cost €600 million. The government intends to fund this by introducing a flat rate ‘utility charge’ next year and then once meters are installed to begin charging people based on their use of water. read full story / add a comment
