The Atlantic Homecare outlet on Childers Road, Limerick that earlier this year removed all Israeli produce from its shelves (in response to a protest by the IPSC) now appears to be redoubling its effort to sell as much Israeli made Keter produce as possible to unsuspecting customers. In what appears to be a clear attempt to at least distract, if not completely mislead customers, they have a large poster on a Keter shed with the slogan "Irish Owned - make it Irish make it Atlantic ..." read full story / add a comment ![]()

After it was defeated in its war with Iraq, in 1988 the Iranian Regime massacred thousands of political prisoners. The majority of these were socialists and communists. This is the story of a commemoration which is held each year in honour of these martyrs. Full text and more photos at the link. In Iran , every year on the 31st of August the families of those executed , gather in Khavaran , an unmarked cemetery where thousand of communists and socialists were buried , to commemorate the lives of communists executed in the regime’s jails. This year the families arrived with the same smile and courage that have marked these commemorations for years. Elderly mothers who lost their sons in that period were joined by younger members of the families as well as students and supporters of those executed in 1988. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In yet another blow to the SWP George Galloway has now issued a document which severely criticises the SWP and the way in which it is mismanaging RESPECT. The document is available in full at the url below. "Unhealthy" internal relations, a lack of democratic decision-making, financial crisis and looming "oblivion". Last week, the Respect MP sent a scathing eight page document to all members of the Respect National Committee. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last week, Joan Burton, a highly talented finance spokesperson and stalwart of the Labour Party withdrew her candidacy from the running for leadership of the Labour Party (a centrist concern with a pre-election pact with a right wing party). She cited lack of internal party support for her decision and nominated herself for deputy leader. This is a problem, for the preceeding forty eight hours The Irish independent Newspaper had been running the Gilmore story on both front page and editorial columns as The main bet for leadership, There is no other candidate declared. Deputy leader Liz Mc Manus is delaying nomination until later in the week. The profiling of women in irish politics, especially in mainstream parties relegates women to secondary positions, indeed a cursory glance at the papers indicates that politics is indeed a 'Job for the Boys', Tony O Reilly says so and he makes a lot of profit out of it. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A young member of Ógra Sinn Féin last Saturday night noticed that a building was flying a Union Flag in Newcastle, County Down Ireland. This "butcher's apron" flag is of course offensive to many Irish people, and since the building belonged to the avowedly sectarian "Orange Order" the young man decided that the best way to peacefully protest was to scale the building and remove the offending symbol. Sadly, after removing the flag, the young ÓSF member lost his footing and fell from the roof, injuring his arm. He has received medical treatment and is recovering. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Fatima Regeneration Project Phase 2 is again plunged into turmoil as a consequence of Developer P.Elliott/Maplewood acting in contravention of agreement with local residents despite their co-operation in what could be only best described as a un selfish act of burden bearing by a minority of residents in order to achieve benefits that would be by and large enjoyed by many people some from far wider afield from their local community. read full story / add a comment ![]()

From Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September 2007 men, women and children from every corner of this island - and indeed from much further away - will gather in Glencolumbkille, Donegal. They will come in busses, by car, bicycle or on foot. They will erect CAMP HAVANA and walk the hills surrounding the valley of Glencolumbcille. Some will take the challenging hike across the Slieve League ridge, some will use a more relaxed walking route and some will only go as far as the bus can take them. Some may even attempt to dance salsa! All of them will enjoy Europe's highest sea - cliffs which are surrounded by scenery incomparable to anywhere else on this earth (see http://marette.free.fr/panorama_irlande/panorama1.html). Of course we are not just gathering to admire spectacular scenery. We will gather in what is going to be the biggest show of friendship with people from another island - at least since last year’s Camp Havana. read full story / add a comment |
