But today anyone who reads the financial press knows that the system is in an unprecedented crisis with no clear way out. The following articles offer a variety of ways of understanding the crisis so we can begin to create a world beyond capitalism: read full story / add a comment
national / animal rights / news report Saturday December 03, 2011 12:49 by ARAN 3 images
ARAN, Respect for Animals and the Animal, Anima and Fur Free Alliance (FFA) have released the findings of a new 2011 undercover investigation into Ireland's shameful fur factory farms, showing that yet again, animal suffering, is still very much business as usual. The recently obtained footage from an Irish mink farm, reveals images of animal suffering, including painful injuries on mink's tails; cramped, aged and filthy cages riddled with the animal faeces, and more shockingly the images of stressed, traumatised and balding animals; which spotlights the stereotypical behavior associated with intensive farming. Ireland's government are seeking submissions into Irish fur farms which close on December 31. Getting straight to work, a giant mobile billboard shadowed the Department of Agriculture in Dublin with a message 'FUR FARMING: TIME FOR A BAN,' before taking to the streets to garner public. support. read full story / add a comment

Work was completely halted at Shell’s compound yesterday for over five hours in a great show of resiliance by local campaigners and their supporters. For the past two weeks now, Shell have been attempting to remove masses of peat from the compound in preparation for the tunnel boring machine which is expected to arrive early next year. Progress has been continuously disrupted as protesters brave the winter weather to stop trucks and a determined resistance is building momentum. read full story / add a comment

ALiberation held a creative and illustrative photo-shoot on 29/11/2011 to highlight the influence Minister McEntee has over Fine Gael and the Labour Party. In the photo shoot a cross-roads has been reached, where a road sign points one way for “Ban Irish Fur Farms”, “Save Animals” and “Public Opinion” and in the very opposite direction, the road sign points to “Fur Farms”, “Animal Cruelty” and “200,000 Animals Killed Yearly”. Minister McEntee is seen pointing and directing both political parties towards the latter and away from the a ban of fur farms which would save the lives of approximately 200,000 Minks, Red Foxes and Arctic Foxes each year.

I am going down to the Dáil to protest, I may be alone and I will stand alone... and I'll hold up a banner, perhaps people will show some honour, We should all go down to #OccupyTheDail on December the 5th at 12pm.
If we still have honour and we want to live in dignity on this land, we have to go down on December the 5th. Whoever says it’s not worth it because there will only be a handful of people, I want to tell him you are the reason behind this, and you are a traitor just like the politicians or any cops who beats us in the streets. Your presence with us will make a difference, a big difference! Friday 25th November saw over 5 hours of Shell's peat and stone haulage completely blocked by campaigners, and no arrests were made. First thing in the morning four campaigners had trucks blocked for over an hour and a half, and later on one person climbed on top of a peat truck outside Shell's Bellanaboy refinery, remaining there for 3 and a half hours stopping all haulage. read full story / add a comment

The shrinkage continues, the sea level rises. We are all ion peril.
The recent loss of sea ice in the Arctic is greater than any natural variation in the past 1½ millennia, a Canadian study shows. "The recent sea ice decline … appears to be unprecedented," said Christian Zdanowicz, a glaciologist at Natural Resources Canada, who co-led the study and is a co-author of the paper published Wednesday online in Nature. "We kind of have to conclude that there's a strong chance that there's a human influence embedded in that signal." read full story / add a comment

Cartoons have become explosive, underlining deep political fault lines in the new world order and more often than not, concealing bigotry and diverting debate from racism and imperialism to the much abused concept of “freedom of expression”. The latest episode was started by a cartoon published in Ha’aretz in which the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defence Ehud Barak, say farewell to troops on the way to bomb Iran, while asking them to bomb the UNESCO offices in Ramallah on the way back. read full story / add a comment |
