Iranian Trade union leader Mansour Osanloo has been freed from prison after four years. Osanloo, chair of the Syndicat of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Sherkat-e Vahed), has been leading workers in their fight for better conditions and for independent unions in Iran. Arrested in July 2007, he was charged with organising “propaganda against the regime” and later accused of being a threat to national security. Throughout his imprisonment he has been subject to horrific abuse. In February 2010 there was an attempt on Osanloo’s life in Rajai-Shahr prison. He was attacked by a former member of the Revolutionary Guards state militia with the support of prison wardens. Two other prisoners intervened and saved him. Later in June 2010 further tragedy hit his family when security forces attacked Zoya Samadi, Osanloo’s daughter-in-law, causing her to miscarry. read full story / add a comment

This report from the WSM highlights the deepending crisis in the Irish prison system. Over the years the number of people per capita going to prison has been steadily rising and there are huge dangers with disease and infection from the practice of slopping out. And now an outbreak of TB is reported in three of the prisons. As elsewhere an dangerous drug resistant and largely incurable form of TB is on the rise. This might not seem of relevance to most people but it is not well known that in 2010 there were 520 people were imprisoned for non payment of fines like TV licences, parking fines etc. read full story / add a comment

A new craze where Panda Garra fish suck dead skin from feet is currently being offered in Dublin. The Alliance for Animal Rights is concerned about the fish and will be calling on the NSAI to investigate this.In 14 states in the US it is already banned as being unsanitary. Climate scientists lives are at risk. Why? Because they have produced evidence which shows the erxtent of Global Warming and the damage done to the environment. The deniers don't like this and neither do the big mining and oil companies. They go crazy at the idea of paying a carbon tax. These companies have deep pockets and it wouldn't be surprising if they slipped a few dollars to the nuttier deniers to threaten scientists and perhaps go further. Most deniers are harmless folk, they rarely leave their computers and wouldn't have the nerve to counter protest at an environmental demo. But there is always the mad few, looks as if they may be at work in Autralia. A number of Australia's leading climate scientists have been moved into safer accommodation after receiving death threats, in a further escalation of the country's increasingly febrile carbon price debate. The revelation of the death threats follows a week of bitter exchanges between the government and the opposition in the wake of a pro-carbon price TV advert featuring actor Cate Blanchet. Being a denier of GLOBAL warming and supporting the destruction of the Environment is easy. read full story / add a comment

Roisin Ingle writes on the growing number atheists, agnostics, humanists in Ireland and their struggle for recognition. A FEW WEEKS ago Brian Whiteside of the Humanist Association of Ireland addressed a gathering that included Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter as well as various religious leaders. He used the opportunity to raise the issue of our religious presidential oath, which he says is just one example of State discrimination against the growing godless community. The oath, the wording of which is enshrined in the Constitution, is taken in “the presence of Almighty God” and is a non-negotiable promise that must be given by whoever is elected president. Irish greyhounds and dogs of all breeds with their owners will be meeting in Dublin City Centre on Sunday June 19th for the first “Walk for the Greyhounds”, which has been organised to promote greyhounds as family pets. Hundreds of two legged and four legged walkers are expected from all over Ireland, the UK, and other European countries. Walkers will meet at 12 noon, near the Fusilliers Arch at St Stehen’s Green. The walk which will start at 1pm is just over two kilometres through the centre of Dublin. read full story / add a comment

SIPTU’s campaign to reverse the decision to cut funding to Art Ability continues. Thankfully as a result of the Campaign some element of funding has been secured but not sufficient to ensure it can continue to cater for the needs of the most vulnerable in society. Indeed 4 members of staff have been forced to seek alternative employment despite having initially worked on without pay to protect the needs of the clients of the centre. Art Ability provides training and support for 48 young people aged between six and 16 as well as 24 adults. read full story / add a comment

Join us on June 11th for the launch of the Campaign for the Old City Arts Building (COCAB). Our aim is to take back the Old City Arts building, 23-25 Mosse St (near Tara dart station) which has been abandoned for nearly a decade and is now part of the National Assets Management Agency (NAMA). We want the building to be opened up for use as an educational and cultural space, managed collectively by anyone who wants to take part, independent of private or state institutions. We also want to broaden this by demanding that the NAMA legislation be changed so that all disused NAMA buildings can be used by the citizens for social and cultural projects, social housing or (in the case of undeveloped land) community gardens. It is clear that the politics of ‘elected representatives’ has completely failed in the context of the crisis- only people power and direct action can bring real change. read full story / add a comment
