The venue in Ravensdale, Co Louth, is a little difficult to find on a dark Autumn evening. However the effort was very worthwhile. The small concert hall is fashioned on the first floor from an old stable. The lighting was dim and warm with the added touch of two candelabra on either side of the platform and I think there were flowers as well. There was seating for about 70 people and the room was almost full by the time the concert started at 8.00 p.m. last night. A glass of wine could be had at the interval. I opted for a cup of coffee in a different room and made the acquaintance of Patrick Barrow and his grandson William from Monasterboice. read full story / add a comment

Over 15,000 took part in today's historic march of predominantly pensioners outside the Dail to keep the universal Medical Card for the over 70's. Because of their action, solidarity, resiliance, anger and refusal to give in everything will be much different in Ireland. Photoessay from this protest below. read full story / add a comment

Between ten and twelve thousand people turned out in bright sunshine today to demonstrate against the Green Party/Fainna Fáil plan to impose fees for third level education. FF Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe called for consideration of re-imposition of fees earlier this year, and "registration fees" were massively increased in the recent budget. He has signalled that he intends to introduce legislation on third level fees in the new year. read full story / add a comment

Charlie McGreevy having introduced Medical Cards as an automatic right for the over 70s in 2001 in an attempt by Fianna Fail to win support at the upcoming General Election, another Fianna Fail Minister for Finance, Brian Lenehan, then proposed taking away this automatic right and reintroducing a means test. Anyone with an income in access of e241.00 per week was to lose their Medical Card. That meant people over seventy who had worked and paid taxes all their lives and may have had a small occupational pension would have lost their medical cards. It was a disgrace. All this is in an effort to save e100 million! Yet the same Minister for finance had no problem providing a guarantee to the banks of almost e500 billion! Northern Ireland, which experienced nothing like the wealth that occurred in the Republic of Ireland during the years of the Celtic Tiger, is about to introduce free medical prescriptions for all, but then, they enjoy universal free health care. read full story / add a comment

On the afternoon of Friday, November 22, 1963, the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed by a sniper as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. That infamous weekend was the beginning of 24 hour saturation television news coverage, the moment when the post-war generation of baby boomers received their first initiation of the brutal underbelly beneath the American dream, it was the beginning of the political drama of the 1960’s that almost tore the US apart as the lid was lifted on America’s unease with its superpower status, the divide between rich and poor and the cancer of racial injustice. It is a drama that is unresolved and still poisons American society today. As a new young energetic African-American President appears to have the White House within his reach, it appears there is a chance that the festering wound opened in 1963 may finally be closed. Or maybe not. read full story / add a comment
