Summary: The mayor of Nagasaki spoke today of some of the horror caused by the second bomb dropped on Japan by the United States on this date in 1945: over 134,000 deaths - the numbers still growing - 2,707 added to the list over the past year, elderly survivors still suffering from the after-effects, 59 years later. He criticised the present United States for continuing to possess and proliferate nuclear weapons and asked that they join hands to eliminate them. A protest has been called for on Tuesday 10th August at 12.30. The protest, which has been called for by Residents Against Racism, will take place outside the PD head office on South Frederick street and has been called to protest against the proposed deportation of Kate Bamidele.
Kate Bamidele is in immediate danger of being deported to her death. If the government sends her back to Nigeria, she faces the prospect of being stoned to death. She needs your support to change the government’s mind and allow her to stay in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

According to Walter Kansteiner, US Under-secretary of State for African affairs, African oil "has become a national strategic interest". Ed Royce, the influential Republican senator for California and chairman of the Congress African subcommittee, maintains "African oil should be treated as a priority for US national security post 9-11" .
