"it shall be for the house (Dail and Senate) to determine the appropriate balance between the rights of persons and the public interest..."
Okay this is pretty basic - A referendum is needed every time a government wishes to change our constitution - this is because the constitution theoretically exists to protect people from the excesses of any government i.e. any elected government can only work within the confines of what the constitution sets out. This means the constitution belongs to the citizens (i.e. us) not the Government. Whatever government is in power has to get our permission to change it. Lots of things in our constitution are outdated and need to be changed BUT and it's a big BUT we should be really careful of letting it be changed for trivial issues.

HRW reveal that Gaddafi supporters were subject to mas execution after surrendering. Ful story at link.
We found 53 decomposing bodies, apparently Gaddafi supporters, at an abandoned hotel in Sirte, and some had their hands bound behind their backs when they were shot. This requires the immediate attention of the Libyan authorities to investigate what happened and hold accountable those responsible. Live music, refreshments and fun to be had as well! Occupy Galway is part of the international movement against austerity measures imposed on ordinary people around the world. We, the 99% demand: 1 - The removal of the IMF and ECB from all Irish financial affairs; 2 - That the national debt imposed on Irish people from the bank bailouts be lifted; 3 - The return of Irish resources (gas, oil, forestry) to the people of Ireland; 4 - Real particpatory democracy. THIS IS NOT A RECESSION, IT'S A ROBBERY!!! See you there! read full story / add a comment ![]()

Higgins the big winner after FG's Mitchell pulls out
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/1017/1....html
YOUTH FORUM: LABOUR CANDIDATE Michael D Higgins comfortably won over an audience of young people at a presidential youth forum in Dublin at the weekend, to which all seven candidates had been invited, but just five attended.
While Dana “just declined the invitation” to the SpunOut.ie Youth Rising forum, Fine Gael candidate Gay Mitchell “cancelled at the last minute”, according to organiser Ruairí McKiernan.
“I’m pretty disappointed in him. This was organised three months ago and last night he said he had to go to Cork instead. I think it says a lot about his attitude.”

October 29th is the big day in our campaign to push for Ireland to update it's outdated 100 year old Protection of Animals Act. We need new, proper, meaningful and modern legislation that reflects society's treatment towards animals and whilst this will be a tough challenge to achieve, we're deadly pressed to ensure we fight as hards as possible. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Nature has a special issue on the retreat of the Arctic Ice. Here are extracts from some articles. Last winter, parts of the Canadian Arctic basked in record-breaking warmth. In the town of Coral Harbour, at the mouth of Hudson Bay, temperatures rose above freezing for a few days in January for the first time ever. Across the Arctic, extreme climate conditions are becoming the norm, even as the region faces other profound changes, such as the growing political power of indigenous peoples and the race to extract mineral resources (see page 172). This week, Nature examines how these changes are affecting scientific access to the north (see page 174), and what scientists should do to keep Arctic development green (see page 179) and peaceful (see page 180). Some are calling for international regulations to safeguard the environment as ship traffic increases (see page 157). Both research and development need to consider the views of local peoples, and scientists are learning how to do so (see page 182). Locals can provide insight into environmental changes; scientists might help them to be heard. http://www.nature.com/news/2011/111012/full/478171a.html read full story / add a comment ![]()
