I was present in the Commons on January 24, when foreign secretary William Hague made a statement on European Union sanctions against Iran. In response to a question, he said that, while the UK was “not calling for, or advocating, military action”, it is “the job of our armed forces to prepare for many contingencies” and “all options remain on the table”. This was reflected on the Labour front bench by shadow foreign secretary John Spellar, that well known progressive politician (there’s no irony in Hansard, but I hope it’s not the same in this meeting). Spellar reflects the same attitude - that we should be ready for military action read full story / add a comment

As part of Israeli Apartheid Week 2012, the Dublin branch of the IPSC will be holding a “rolling boycott” demo calling on consumers to boycott Israeli products until Israel ends it occupation of Palestinian lands and abides by its obligations under international law. We will assemble at 2pm outside Dunnes Stores on Henry Street (famous for its role in the 1984-87 South African Anti-Apartheid strike by Dunnes’ workers), and begin leafleting and engaging with shoppers. From there we will visit the Jervis Shopping Centre on Henry St, Aldi on Parnell St, and wind up outside Tesco on Parnell St all of whom stock Israeli products. read full story / add a comment

On Monday 13th February 2012, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a four hour day-time vigil outside the Israel Embassy in Dublin in solidarity with Palestinian political prisoner and hunger striker Khader Adnan. This action took place on the 58th day of his hunger strike against his administrative detention (internment without trial) by, and physical abuse suffered at the hands of, the Israeli state. Khader was detained on 18th December 2012 and put in prison for four months (despite not being charged with anything). He immediately embarked upon a hunger strike in protest at the conditions and treatment faced by both himself and the over 4,440 other Palestinian political prisoners languishing in Israeli prisons. Physicians for Human Rights – Israel were today allowed to examine Khader, and reported that he remains shackled to his bed, his condition, “already at a life-threatening stage, continues to deteriorate” and he is “experiencing extreme pain.” It is clear that without intervention to secure his release, he will die soon. read full story / add a comment |
