As the hare coursing season draws to a shameful close, hunters, shooters and everyone who's anyone in the world of blood sports will attend the Clonmel hare coursing finals. Over the last number of years ARAN has been staging lively demonstrations directly opposite the gates where the coursing and hunting enthusiasts arrive by car and coach in their thousands. This year we plan on being there and we hope that you'll schedule in the day to be there for the animals whilst making it the start of your commitment to stand with other caring people to bring blood sports in Ireland to an end. read full story / add a comment

All proceeds will go to the Private Manning Family Fund, raising money to support family members in Wales with the cost of prison visits to Chelsea in Kansas. Through our endorsement of Revolutionary Republicanism, we stated without apology that the defence of Irish Sovereignty, the achievement of true Independence and the struggle for Socialism were mutually inclusive tasks and that negation of one signalled a dangerous rejection of the other. We stated clearly that the mobilisation of the masses is a task which cannot be bypassed and that key to that task is the presence of Republicanism within and alongside day to day struggles of workers, campaigning groups and communities. read full story / add a comment

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Israeli ‘Operation Cast Lead’ attack on Gaza, and to highlight Israeli's ongoing cruel and illegal siege of Gaza, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) is calling on people to gather at 2pm at the Ha’penny Bridge, Dublin on New Year’s Eve. Please bring Palestinian flags if you have them. Please spare an hour of your time to remember the victims of the attack and the ongoing illegal Israeli siege of Gaza, where Israeli attacks and killings are ongoing, even in the face of the man-made crisis there arising from sporadic power outages as a result of severe fuel shortages. read full story / add a comment

Luke Ming Flanagan had done his research. He knew that the word ‘piss’ was not a banned word within the rarified and sensitive environs of Dail Eireann. He had checked out the Consumer Act in order to bolster his political point. He then planned and carried out a very clever and effective political stunt to guarantee maximum publicity. Flanagan wanted to highlight the fact that the Government was planning to charge people for the ‘privilege’ of drinking contaminated water. read full story / add a comment

Recently appointed Judge Faughnan presided over this month's district court session at Belmullet. Two Shell to Sea related cases were finalised resulting in one campaigner avoiding conviction by receiving the benefit of the probation act and another - local Shell to Sea spokesperson Terence Conway - being convicted and fined E200. When the Belmullet District court session opened on Wednesday morning there were seven campaigners due to appear in court on charges arising from the ongoing imposition of, and protest against, the Shell Corrib gas project in North West Mayo. Shell Santa also made an appearance at court bearing gives of alcohol but the Gardaí didn't seem too happy for him to visit them in such a public setting. read full story / add a comment

In the wake of Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food & the Marine, Simon Coveney's upcoming decision on whether or not to grant the state agency for fishing and aquaculture in Ireland, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, licenses for fish farms in Galway Bay, Slow Food International has reaffirmed its position on intensive fish farms. Slow Food does not consider open net pen fish farms an environmentally sound practice, Piero Sardo, President of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, confirms. "Open net pen aquaculture is not a solution to the problem of overfishing: It damages natural ecosystems on a local and a global level, including wild stocks, habitats and water quality. Feeding carnivorous salmon in farms means other wild species must also be harvested, resulting in a larger carbon footprint - since the fish feed must be fished, processed and transported". read full story / add a comment

At a time when the Government is advancing the ridiculous proposition that the Irish State is "regaining its economic sovereignty" by leaving the Eurozone bailout, sensible people will be more concerned at the possibility of a Cypriot-style "bail-in" for the Irish banks, entailing confiscation of customer deposits over €100,000, as the euro-currency crisis continues and the planned EU "banking union" makes provision for such steps. The continuing Eurozone crisis was discussed at the EPAM conference in Athens, Greece, last weekend week. At this event representatives of organisations from different EU countries agreed on the vital need for the Eurozone States to re-establish their national currencies and work towards the dissolution of the Eurozone, which is destroying the democracy of the peoples and States that use the euro and wreaking economic destruction and social misery on country after country. Below for your information is a copy of the joint press statement that was issued after this conference on behalf of the participant organisations. It was signed by Anthony Coughlan on behalf of the above organisation. read full story / add a comment
