(Brussels – 13 March) Striking footage of newborn seal pups on Canadian ice floes was last night (Thur) projected on a building close to where European decision-makers are discussing a ban in the trade of seal products from commercial hunts which was organized by International Fund for Animal Welfare. Here in Ireland ARAN are sorry to report that the Irish government is lame in their support for a complete EU trade ban on seal products from Canada. Next Tuesday March 17 a meeting will take place in Europe that will finally pan out individual EU government positions on the EU ban, so we have literally three days to change John Gormley’s mind, the man whom may hold the power to influence the Irish position for a total ban. An EU trade ban on seal products from Canada would literally mean that they have no market for the seal skins, it’s imperative that we get this ban, just like it were in the 80’s, but John Gormley’s position is that Irish government may not support a total EU trade ban. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Besides the draconian and unjust imprisonment of Maura Harrington for the relatively mild offence of slapping a Guard across the face during of the course of a Shell operation in which 20 protestors were injured by Garda acting as Shell's thugs and battering ram in forcing a path for a digger and which none of them have been brought to book, it was the sinister decision of Judge Devins for Maura Harrington to be psychiatrically assessed that drew the most condemnation and fire, notably Senator David Norris who described it as "terribly, terribly, dangerous.” read full story / add a comment ![]()

Yesterday evening Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington was sentenced to 28 days in prison in relation to an assault charge arising from the incident at Pollathomais Pier on the 11th June 2007. Sentenced to one month in prison for protesting against Shell Another Shell to Sea protester was imprisoned today when retired school teacher Maura Harrington was given a one month sentence for supposedly assaulting a garda on June 11th 2007. She received a round of applause from the people in the court as she was led off the the prison van, much to the judge's displeasure. Harrington was also ordered to pay a one thousand euro fine and one thousand euro to the Garda benevolent fund (she refused to agree to the latter). She arrived in Dublin tonight to be held in Mountjoy Prison on the North Circular Road. There was the usual heavy police presence, and when supporters gathered around the van to let her know they were there, the gardaí responded in the only way they know how, with violence. Since the protests against Shell started a large number of people have been injured by garda actions. Some have even been hospitalised, but not a single garda has been pros read full story / add a comment |
