The Israeli authorities must cease the practice of holding individuals in administrative detention, and ensure Palestinians in their custody are not subjected to ill-treatment and have access to adequate medical care when needed. Ann Harrison, Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International.

The expected release of Palestinian Khader Adnan after four months in Israeli custody without charge or trial coincides with a mass prisoner hunger strike which Amnesty International says demonstrates anger over administrative detention and prison conditions. Adnan, a 34-year old baker allegedly linked to Islamic Jihad, is due to be released in a deal between his lawyers and the Israeli authorities in February in which he agreed to end his 66-day hunger strike protesting at his administrative detention and ill-treatment. He had been held since December 2011.

John McGuffin an Ulster anarchist was cremated 10 years ago on this coming May Day in Belfast. I met John in London almost 40 years ago, when we got drunk together.John was the sole anarchist of the People's Democracy movement of the late sixties and carried alone an anarchist banner on the infamous Burntollet part of the civil rights march which was viciously attacked by Loyalists in and out of uniform. He was interned in 1971, writing a book later, about his experience and about internment in Ireland, followed by another book called 'The Guineapigs', about the torture of political internees of that time read full story / add a comment

Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the Front de Gauche is now the third candidate in the French Presidential election, at 16% he is level with La Pen but his trajectory is upward. His standing is sending shivers up the spines of the French Bourgeoisie, fearful of what concessions Edwin will wring from Hollande for support in the second round of voting. Here are two articles regarding his candidacy. Full texts at links. read full story / add a comment

IRISH HORSES BETRAYED….as Irish Government plans to export to China…a country steeped in animal abuse. It goes without saying that being a thoroughbred racehorse gets you no better treatment from those who exploit you.
As horse racing pundits in the UK give lip service to the horse killings at the Grand National we do not hear many racing supporters condemning the move by the Irish Government to supply China with Irish horses.

Its not just a rogue attack from the Israeli Terrorist State thats on the agenda: Obama and his minions are deliberately psyching up the US people with their bellicose statements. Preconditions which cannot be met are being set for negotiations. Israel is being supplied with enhanced missile capability. Yassamine Mather deals with these points in the article below. Full text at link.

On Saturday April 14 Iran will attend talks with six world powers. The US has indicated this is Iran’s “last chance” to avoid military intervention and the Obama administration is taking very specific demands to the talks as preconditions for further negotiations: for example, Iran “must immediately close” a large nuclear facility allegedly built underneath a mountain if it wants to avoid a devastating strike. read full story / add a comment
April 24th is Republic Day
national / history and heritage / event notice Saturday April 14, 2012 17:06 by Tom Stokes   image 1 image
The anniversary of the 1916 Revolution, April 24th, has always been ignored by the Irish State which owes its very existence to the courage and vision of the revolutionaries. This citizens’ campaign intends to correct that, and by naming the new national day ‘Republic Day’ wishes to engage the broad mass of citizens as active participants in reshaping this State to the model contained in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, recreating the progressive, modern republic that was intended to work for the citizens, and not against their interests. We citizens can bring this to pass by acting together. The campaign needs active support now to establish Republic Day by 2016. read full story / add a comment

"The failed north Korea rocket launch has been pounced upon gleefully by a servile media as an excuse to peddle and rehash the usual propaganda statements about North Korea that the US likes to see being propagated. To balance this wave of propaganda, here is an old article by war veteran Brian Willson which is somewhat less hysterical. Reproduced verbatim here under the terms of the global research site

Profit takes precedence as drinks industry representative body tries to downplay damning report about alcohol and it's relationship with domestic violence and rape in Ireland. In light of this report, perhaps those in government who still have some semblance of a moral compass remaining could override their complete deference to money, economic considerations and profit as the most important things in our society, and might now consider removing sales of cheap alcohol from supermarkets. This is long overdue as the strains on our already underfunded health system from alcohol related cases and the social breakdown exacerbated by the availability of cheap alcohol, often cheaper than bottled water, are becoming more and more pronounced. read full story / add a comment
