Two weeks ago, Hugh Mc Laughlin (artist and comic-maker) was handing out little Tara Vigil Leaflets on the streets of Dublin. He was approached by a member of Dublin City Council Litter Service 'Operatives' and asked to move on or he would be prosecuted and/or fined under litter laws. He gave out the leaflets and refused to be bullied. The gardai were called. The Gardai did not prosecute nor did they take his name. There are five “official” nuclear-weapon states in this world - the US, the UK, Russia, France and China - that are permitted to possess nuclear weapons under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (the NPT) [1]. The US is currently proposing that India be granted the privileges of these “official” nuclear-weapon states, even though it has refused to sign the NPT and has developed nuclear weapons. In effect, the US is proposing that India be recognised as the 6th nuclear-weapon state in this world, while remaining outside the NPT. Pro Choice Activists marked International Women's Day by holding a protest outside a Rogue family planning agency on Dorset Street. The Agency called "Womens Resource Agency" and also using the name "British Alternatives Pregnancy Services" was covered up with a brown sheeting - in an attempt to prevent their identity and location being exposed in the media. read full story / add a comment

Despite, predictions to the contrary, elections in the wee north continue to be pretty much a sectarian headcount. The predictions of an SDLP revival, on one side, and a grassroots republican revolt, on the other, both turned out to be wishful thinking as Sinn Fein and the DUP continued their growth among the respective sides of the sectarian divide. The prediction of an increased turnout (which was repeated right until the end of counting) also turned out to be a figment. read full story / add a comment ![]()
