Janine Allis-Smith, active with the CORE Campaign, Cumbria, displays a newspaper reporting the death of Ronald Marr, who hanged himself aged 19 after battling luekemia since the age of 5. Janine told us that Ronald had been the last survivor of a group of children that she took on a day out to London some years ago, the rest have all died. Ronald lived in a highly contaminated area. [... Soil samples taken by Greenpeace 11.5 km south of Sellafield, were 400 times higher than those taken 11 km from Chernobyl. These radiation levels are a result of nearly 50 years of reprocessing and have made the Irish Sea the most radioactively contaminated sea in the world. Monday night saw another picket of the Dublin corporation council meeting to protest the continuing attempt to impose bin charges on the cities population. In today's issue a letter to the Heads of State now arriving at the Earth Summit charges that so far negotiatiors have merely found new, creative ways of expressing agreement already reached elsewhere. However, unlike the negotiators the Heads of State are not anonymous. Their names will be associated with this agreement and history will judge them harshly if it fails or proves ineffective. In the early hours of Saturday morning activists occupied the archaeological site of Carrickmines Castle in a non-violent direction that could rival the Glen of the Downs protest.
