On Thursday night, Scott Ritter the former UN weapons inspector for Iraq spoke to a packed room in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway, at a meeting hosted by the Galway Alliance Against War. Scott was in Ireland to testify at Mary Kelly's trial, and spoke at length about her actions in disarming a US warplane at Shannon airport, and how he felt more people need to become active citizens, rather than just passive consumers, if we are to make into a reality the notion that both Ireland and America are democratic republics. read full story / add a comment

In March 1849, several hundred starving people set out on a desperate walk from Louisburgh in County Mayo, Ireland. Their destination was a mansion where dinner was being served to the Board of Guardians who had the powers to release food or issue certificates of destitution to give entry to the workhouse. Bank Holiday Monday: up to 1000 people partied hard on the streets of Dublin on the south side of the River Liffey along Burgh Quay and George's Quay. The east end of the quay at Butt Bridge was blocked and at 3pm the party was in full swing with three sound systems, capoeira, football, twister, dancing, bongoing, cheering and guerrilla gardening. read full story / add a comment
