Surely a pet dog cannot be taken from someone purely because he is a certain breed, especially if he is under proper control and has not done anything wrong. If Dublin City Council can get away with this unfair proposition then what will come next?. This situation must constitute discrimination at the very least. The very idea that DCC are responsible for dogs who bite people on council property is wrong surely?. It was my understanding that owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. If a person falls off a ladder in a Council house are the Council responsible for that too Besides being indiscriminate , this proposition is unenforceable. Where will the dogs be taken to and by whom?. Who will rehome them??? How long will they be kept and where? There is already legislation already in place against dog fighting, if this law was enforced we would not have this problem. read full story / add a comment

This year is the 40th anniversary of the murder of Che Guevara by the CIA in Bolivia. Che was in Bolivia trying to assist the revolution taking place there when he was captured and shot, his last words apparently being “Shoot, coward, you’re going to kill a man”. Che Guevara’s legacy and the struggle for socialism in Latin America today will by discussed at a upcoming forum on the 21st of July in Limerick. The event titled ‘RESISTANCE’ is to take place between 1 and 6 upstairs in Riddlers Bar and is organised by Socialist Youth. read full story / add a comment

In 1941 a bill was brought before the Dail which would make trade unions pay for licences to negotiate on behalf of their members. Without a licence workers and their unions could be sued by employers for loss of profits if they went on strike. read full story / add a comment

For the first time in their history, the Irish Green party is in government. The deal that they struck with Fianna Fail has been criticised in many quarters as a “sell-out” – and with some justification, since the Greens have changed sides on the issue of Shannon airport’s use by the US military, the conflict between Shell and the residents of Rossport and the decision to route the M3 motorway through the lucratively re-zoned lands of Fianna Fail supporters, who happen to live near Tara.
