At our meeting today, the members of the Glasgow branch of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group agreed unanimously to support the repatriation to the Free State of Noel Maguire who is the only remaining Irish political prisoner still incarcerated in an English jail. We are concerned for the health and well being of Noel who despite having family in the 26 Counties has been refused repatriation. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin National Congress held an extraordinary meeting this weekend to discuss the Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle initiative on policing.

The Congress passed a motion setting out a revolutionary new model of policing with radical changes in structure and practice and called on all Ógra members to vote against the Ard Chomhairle motion at the Extraordinary Ard Fheis next Sunday.

One loyalist and his associates murdered ten people and committed
seventy-two other crimes while colluding with police in N. Ireland.
This occurred with the knowledge and support of the Police command
at the highest level. These are the conclusions of the N. Ireland Police
Ombudsman’s (Nuala O'Loan) report publicly released today regarding
the actions of one loyalist unit between 1991 and 2003.

Possibly like many if not most other people, I thought Foetal Alcohol Syndrome was a condition that affected the children of alcoholics – those who drank every day throughout their pregnancy or binged regularly. I knew that a couple of glasses of wine with a meal once every week or two wouldn’t do any harm, particularly later in pregnancy. I was supported in that belief by many a doctor and magazine or newspaper article. True, some people said it would be better not to drink but in a context where a glass of Guinness a day was even said to be good for babies because of the nutrients it contained, the total abstainers seemed extreme in their caution. read full story / add a comment

"Pain, tears, fear, hatred. But also euphoria, the desire to see an end to war and to fascism, the longing to create a new Italy. Life had a meaning in those days; it wasn't just a matter of dragging yourself from one day to next.
Why deny it? Ettore knew: those months in the mountains had been the finest in his life. Afterwards there had been nothing of real interest.
He didn't head for home. He turned into Via Lame, and arrived at the Porta. The sky was full of stars, hundreds of stars, maybe thousands.
He had done it a thousand time, and he did it again.
He remembered the battle, shot for shot.
There was fog, and someone shouted, 'Garibaldi's fighting!'
He had yelled with all his might, 'Red Star is winning!' "
Ettore in ‘54’ p.310
