I submitted this article to Z Magazine awhile ago, hoping to get it into the March edition. The assault on Iraq changed priorities, so it was moved back to the July/August issue. http://www.zmag.org/ZMagSite/curTOC.htm I'm sure most of you know this story already, and there's also a lot more to be told. Thought I'd share this anyway, and if you aren't familiar with Z Magazine, I'd recommend checking it out. -Sean read full story / add a comment

"George W. Bush declared the “War on Terrorism” “the first war of the 21st century” almost like a boy proudly claims a newfound toy. Soon after followed the knee-jerk USA PATRIOT Act, a misguided piece of follow-the-leader legislation ushering in a new era of human rights violations. Writing for LAWeekly.com, Christine Pelisek has compiled a mile-long list of post 9/11 “accomplishments” and statistics facilitated by the expanded reach the PATRIOT Act granted to federal offices and the creation of the Homeland Security department. For example: “Number of al Qaeda or allied terror suspects arrested by officials since 9/11: 2,700. Number of U.S. citizens indicted by a federal grand jury for al Qaeda-related activities: 5.” Newfound capacity for the Bush administration to exploit post-9/11 fear and grief for its own secret purposes: Priceless. GLOBALiSE RESiSTANCE BULLETiN! The GR meeting on Wednesday 16th was amazing...the discussion, energy and enthusiasm to get things done really demonstrates that the electricity about the build up towards the WEF is gathering momentum! I think considering that the European Time magazine called the WEF the 'headquarters' of Globalisation that we should realise just how HUGE the mobilisations for Oct could be if we do our job right...There is so much anger in the air at the moment against our NeoLiberal Fianna Fail/PD 'overlords' on top of an atmosphere of political generalisation the likes of which WORLDWIDE has never been seen!! PERMANENT GLOBALiSED RESiSTANCE! read full story / add a comment

The Irish Music Rights Organisation, and organisations like it around the world, administers licences for performing rights. Developed from copyright theory, performing rights act as a justification for prescriptive control, making it legitimate for one person to prescribe the actions of another unless a fee is paid. Have you ever given performing rights a second thought? have you ever questioned the validity of performing rights? Have you ever thought about the role of persuasion and coercion in the politics of copyright and performing rights? read full story / add a comment

One person in five speaks the Irish language on a daily basis according to new statistics released from the Irish Central Statistics Office. Three quarters of the speakers are at school. 66.6% of the people surveyed said they had the ability to speak Irish but rarely spoke the language. They said that if they spoke it they would only use it on a weekly basis. Across the country 1.57 million can speak Irish fluently. In 1996 1.43 million spoke the language and although the figures for 2003 seem to be positive they have to be regarded within the context that few people actually answered this question in the survey. The largest number of speakers over the age of three in the country are in Galway. In Galway city the proportion of speakers has increased to 50.5%. read full story / add a comment |
