In the next few weeks, more than likely An Bord Pleanála will be announcing their decision on whether to grant permission to Shell to build the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline. Below is a review of the reopened oral hearing that ran from the 24th of August until the 1st of October in 2010 in Belmullet. Again (this is the fourth convening of an oral hearing), opponents of the Corrib Gas Project made lengthy and comprehensive submissions on why they are opposed to the project. A fair few of these submissions can be read in full here: http://www.shelltosea.com/content/submissions-bord-pleanala read full story / add a comment

The much trumpeted discovery of RNA and DNA copperfastened in the public mind the discrete, "quantum" characteristics; in a sort of "digital" understanding of human genetics. It may have blinded us to qualitative effects and the incalculable genetic fallout from widespread prescription of neuroleptics and other pharmaceuticals. One of the tragically serious ironies of this is that people of otherwise very high genetic perfection are often the most prone to "mental illness." read full story / add a comment

Former Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern suggested that "cover" for any US torture taxis that "surfaced" would be provided through random inspections at Shannon, a new confidential cable on the Wikileaks site reveals.Ahern said that he "could use a little more information" about US flights in 2007, “musing that it might not be a bad idea to allow the random inspection of a few planes to proceed, which would provide cover if a rendition flight ever surfaced”, stated former US ambassador to Ireland Thomas Foley.

He had finally been released on bail after nine days in solitary confinement at Wandsworth Prison. Harsher bail conditions were added by the High Court than were imposed days earlier at the Westminister Magistrates Court. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/dec/16/julian-assa...-jail read full story / add a comment

Only IFUT and TUI proposed doing anything about Public Sector Pension Cuts. INTO and INMO mentioned the cuts in statements. There was no mention of the cuts on Websites of the following bodies: ICTU, SIPTU, ASTI, CPSU, PSEU, IMPACT. Union responses are pasted below. While INTO, ASTI, TUI are running a campaign against the pension rip-off of new public servants announced in the Budget, there is no mention of this issue by the silent unions above. It is believed that ICTU has refused to oppose the new “pension Scheme” which is in effect a tax because the individual gets less out than was contributed (Trident Report to Teaching Unions). There is no proposal by any union to do anything about the pay cut for new entrants. This decision breaches a whole range of existing industrial relations agreements and agreed circular letters. read full story / add a comment
