In Leipzig over the Easter weekend, Irish activists participated in an international discussion of tactics for the anti-war movement, in the formulation of a declaration demanding an end to the ongoing militarisation of Leipzig-Halle airport, and in a protest march from the nearby town of Schkeuditz to the airport. In advance of the annual USI Congress, Red Wedge previewed proceedings with an article "What is to be done with the Union of Students in Ireland?" In this article, he offers an eyewitness account of the event and some thoughts on the future of the student movement.
It soon becomes clear that McGuirk - a former officer of the Freedom Institute who has been involved with both Ogra Fianna Fail and young Fine Gael, is too progressive for many of the 200 or so delegates who represent student unions from across Ireland. His plea for USI to continue its link with SIPTU and for the annual congress not to axe the deputy president position who co-ordinates campaigns is warmly received by the UCD delegation. No one else in the hall welcomes these words. Maurice Roes contribution is interrupted by regular applause. His final bit of auction politics in his call for support is that he will ensure that a new website will be constructed if he is elected-sets the congress on fire. read full story / add a comment |
