The UNITE trade union has called on Labour to resist the lure of coalition with Fine Gael and opt instead to lead a ‘game changing’ opposition coalition of the left. “This election was about change,” said UNITE Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly. “Part of the change was unequivocal; the removal of Fianna Fáil from power, but the rest is now in the hands of the Labour Party leadership.” “The people did not vote for a Fine Gael overall majority. Their policies on privatisation, austerity and income cuts did not attract eno ugh support and should not now be facilitated by the tired old fallback of coalition with Labour.” read full story / add a comment

The community sector is being urged to sit up and take action to prevent it being seen as an easy target by both the Assembly and Westminster when the budget cuts are finalised. The call came at a public meeting in Omagh on Thursday night (17th February) organised by trade union SIPTU, which addressed how vulnerable the community sector will be to the budget cuts. The crowd was made up of a cross section of local councillors, community group and resident association representatives from the Omagh area. read full story / add a comment

Gholam-Reza Khademizadeh, the head of the Supreme Association of Labour Associations (SALA), has announced that 43 per cent of Iranian workers live under the poverty line. This is a big admission by the leader of one of the Iranian regime’s bogus so-called labour organisations. Fathollah Bayat, the leader of another fake pro-regime organisation, the Union of Contract Workers, has gone even further by saying that 85 per cent of urban households live below the absolute poverty line! read full story / add a comment |
