DUBLIN – September 24, 2004 – The Irish Seas Nuclear Free Flotilla (ISNFF) will stage a peaceful protest on October 3 in Dublin, opposing a plutonium shipment from the U.S. that is currently bound for France and due to pass within 150 miles of Ireland’s south coast, breaching the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 200 miles. The ISNFF points out that the countries participating in this shipment - France, the U.S. and U.K. - have failed to comply with international law, and have shown a blatant disregard for the concerns of coastal nations. read full story / add a comment

Socialist Party Press Release -Presidential Election

Question is not whether there should be an Election; It's whether there should be a Presidency
By Joe Higgins TD

The fact that the bigger Parties in Dáil Éireann are not to put forward candidates for a Presidential Election expresses just how important this office is. The question now is not whether there should be an Election; it's whether there should be a Presidency. Quite clearly, the Presidency is a superfluous office and should be abolished. Talk about the President being able to reach out to the marginalised etc., should be exposed for the cant it is. What groups marginalised by capitalist society need is not symbolic gestures but real changes in policies that affect them and real investment of resources in areas of need.

Los Angeles and Washington, DC, Sept. 15, 2004 – California Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney yesterday rejected an attempt by Unocal Corp. to dismiss a lawsuit charging it is responsible for human rights abuses committed by the notoriously brutal Burmese military on behalf of Unocal’s Yadana Pipeline project in southern Burma. The Court’s denial of the oil company’s motion for a judgment in their favor clears the way for a jury trial to begin after eight years of litigation. read full story / add a comment
