Campaigners for St Luke's Cancer Hospital in Rathgar thought that the decision not to make it the southside Centre of Excellence in 2005 which meant closure and a move to St James Hospital had been indefinitely suspended due to the local and national opposition. But no, Minister Harney who always knows best ,has a Bill before the Dail at the moment with the innocent title Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010 which will dissolve the board of St Luke's and transfer the valuable 18 acre site and the other assets to the dysfunctional HSE who might well sell the land at a bargain price to balance their books. Anyone who cares about this great hospital needs to get onto TDs immediately especially John Gormley and Chris Andrews. read full story / add a comment

Mash Direct: Northern Ireland food company that hosted Prime Minister accused of denying rights to employees. It was with astonishment that many employees of Mash Direct read the headlines of Newtownards Chronicle (27/05/2010) following the stately visit by Prime Minister David Cameron to the food production factory in Comber, County Down where they routinely spend 60 hours or more of their week. Manager Martin Hamilton spoke eloquently of the growth of the firm through, ‘determination and hard work’ and said nothing of the determination of those who do the hard work to have their basic employment rights upheld within his expanding business. read full story / add a comment

SpunOut.ie a national web based youth organisation, is going to run a pilot project youth activist training programme this summer. The organisation has long held the view that younger people are often treated like 'people in waiting' rather that citizens with a right to partcipate in Irish Society. We hope that through efforts, such as this course and some other longer term projects that we are brewing up here in SpunOut.ie that we can help to facilitate younger people to get active about changing the things that bother them .We think this is really urgent at the moment due to the levels of youth unemployment and disengagement from the political or civic sphere here. We are seeking your input and suggestions for the content of our short courses. We seek input from activists young old or inbetween- details below for how you can share your ideas with us. read full story / add a comment

We regret and deplore the killings which took place as Israeli troops, in defiance of international law, boarded and assaulted ships, and wounded many and killed some of the participants in a flotilla seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza (itself a morally outrageous policy) to bring humanitarian aid. We ask all people of peace to dedicate at least fifteen minutes today (Memorial Day in the US) to silent memorial for those peace activists who have been killed (and we call upon all synagogues around the world to say Kaddish for those people at their Shabbat services this coming weekend), and for prayer for the speedy recovery of all those wounded in this attack (mostly peace activists, but also the Israeli soldiers who boarded the boats with violence). read full story / add a comment |
