The Living Wage Campaign was lauched today in City Hall. It is calling for a Living Wage of 10 euro an hour as the minimum rate that any employees of companies awarded public contracts should be paid. Crumlin based Cllr. Eric Byrne has submitted a motion to Dublin City Council calling for contracts only to be given to companies that pay a Living Wage. The campaign launch was supported by Mick O Reilly of the ATGWU, Jack O Connor of SIPTU, Labour Youth, Joanne Delaney and Pat Rabbitte T.D. leader of the Labour Party. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will tomorrow mark the second anniversary of the landmark International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling that Israel’s wall in the West Bank is illegal. The IPSC will pay a visit to the Department of Foreign Affairs to deliver some 5,000 petitions collected in recent months by its Dublin and Limerick branches. The petitions will be handed in at 12.30pm, preceded by a ceremonial signing of the petition by a number of politicians from various political parties, including Senator Brendan Ryan of Labour. read full story / add a comment

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), elected representatives from Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour condemned Israel’s escalation of the crisis in Palestine, including their jailing of Palestinian elected representatives. They commended the IPSC demonstration this Saturday, 8th July at 2pm at the Central Bank in Dublin as a way of highlighting the humanitarian crisis Palestinians face. Aoife Daly from Amnesty International warned of ‘Gaza verging on a humanitarian catastrophe.’

Five peace activists from the pacifist Catholic Worker movement (www.catholicworker.org) return to Dublin's Four Courts this Wednesday July 5th for their third trial in 16 months.

The five defendants - Ciaron O'Reilly, Deirdre Clancy, Karen Fallon, Damien Moran and Nuin Dunlop face two charges of 'criminal damage without a lawful excuse' arising out of their non-violent disabling of a US Navy plane in the early hours of February 3rd 2003 at Shannon airport, six weeks before the outbreak of the Iraq war. The maximum sentence they face, if convicted, is 10 years imprisonment. read full story / add a comment
