The Irish Government pays for the security of American army personnel in Shannon PEACE & ECONOMIC STABILITY The report in todays Irish Examiner (3/1/10) by Mary Regan that the Irish Government had spent almost €10 million in just three years protecting US troops passing through Shannon Airport to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is just the latest example of an Irish political elite wasting Irish taxpayers money and leading this country deeper and deeper into an even greater economic disaster, one that will make the current situation in a few years look like the good old days. read full story / add a comment

(CAIRO) Gaza Freedom March hunger strikers released yesterday a statement to the world community at the steps of the Egyptian Syndicate of Journalists where they have congregated for the past week due to Egypt's refusal to allow them into Gaza. They renewed their commitment to the values of freedom for Palestine and appealed for a continued struggle until justice is achieved. (CAIRO) Gaza Freedom Marchers yesterday, 1st January 2010, approved a declaration aimed at accelerating the global campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli Apartheid. Roughly 1400 activists from 43 countries converged in Cairo on their way to Gaza to join with Palestinians marching to break Israel's illegal siege. They were prevented from entering Gaza by the Egyptian authorities. As a result, the Freedom Marchers remained in Cairo. They staged a series of nonviolent actions aimed at pressuring the international community to end the siege as one step in the larger struggle to secure justice for Palestinians throughout historic Palestine. The Galway Alliance Against War is throwing a New Year’s Day Peace Party in the Rowing Club in Woodquay Galway on January 1st starting at 7pm and admission is FREE. The Guest of Honour will be Malalai Joya, a female member of the Afghan parliament, who has survived 4 assassination attempts – she is hated by both the Karzai regime that banned her from parliament and the Taliban. Human Rights Watch described her as “the bravest woman in Afghanistan”. GAAW has arranged for a telephone link-up with Ms Joya from her base in the mountains of Afghanistan – Galway’s local peace group believes it will be a truly unique experience for people in Galway to hear first hand why the war in Afghanistan is not the solution to the problems of that troubled country. read full story / add a comment

St Stephens Day and 2009 year end The 26th December will as usual have every pack of hounds in the country well-turned out and doing their annual PR piece for hunting. This of course distracts from the fact that all hunts except drag hunts are out to kill and terrorise animals. After all that is why they exist- to abuse animals for fun. With Minister John Gormley poised to ban stag hunting, the group known as Farmers Against Foxhunting and Trespass (FAFT) has just issued the following statement calling for the abolition of all hunting with hounds in Ireland on the grounds that it threatens their livelihoods (crops, property destroyed etc) and criticises the IFA for failing to come down on the side of farmers menaced by hunting. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch are concerned at the ongoing use of Shannon airport by companies and planes associated with the illegal US rendition program. Since March 2009, five aircraft that have been identified by Amnesty International, the EU Parliament or other sources have been recorded there. One of these planes, a Gulfstream IV with registration N478GS made news in early October when it was met by British military helicopters on a runway at Birmingham International Airport. Six days later it was at Shannon, thus reawakening the possibility that the airport is still facilitating illegal kidnapping and torture. read full story / add a comment

IRELAND PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE, 20/12/09 Irish citizens travel to Middle East in Christmas bid to break Israeli blockade on Gaza Following several months of fundraising, four teams from across Ireland departed on Saturday, 5 December, to travel 4,000 miles across land to Gaza in Palestine to deliver ambulances and humanitarian aid to the besieged people of that tiny region. Concerned Irish citizens from Cork, Derry, Dublin, Galway and Tyrone are bringing two ambulances, a mini-bus, and a truck filled with over 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid. read full story / add a comment

On the 27th of December, 10 Irish people in 3 vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid will attempt to cross into Gaza. They will have spent 3 weeks on the road, and cover over 4,000 miles. The Irish Government is failing children with mental health difficulties. Urgent reform of the mental health system for children and young people under 18 years is desperately needed. In response, the Children’s Rights Alliance and Amnesty International Ireland have brought together 38 NGOs to form the Children’s Mental Health Coalition.
