Former MEP, Patricia McKenna has accussed the EU Commission head, Barroso of illegal interference in Irish referendum, she said "its conveniently opportune that less than two weeks before Irish people vote on the Lisbon treaty the Commission announces that it proposes to give €15m in aid to help former Dell computer workers find new jobs. , Barroso is head of the EU Institution that will gain most power if the treaty is ratified, he should stay out of the debate and respect the existing EU treaties until such time as they are changed”. I would like to respond to a number of Sinn Féin driven articles, letters and texts printed in the North Belfast News last week that included spurious claims against the Republican Network for Unity (RNU). The RNU is an Irish political pressure group with organised branches nationwide. We are not a political party and are not constituted as such. RNU subscribe to the 1916 Proclamation and the attainment of a 32 County Democratic Socialist Republic. On Saturday, 29th of August, members of Sinn Féin’s college cumainn from all across Ireland gathered in the Party’s Ard Oifig, Baile Átha Cliath in order to plan and build for the coming college year. The day was a mix of teambuilding, presentations and workshops intended to help forge a common identity as college cumainn, build relationships and exchange ideas which would better equip republican students in each campus. Workshops on Education, Finance, Public relations, Campaigns and Recruitment were run on a collective basis by those present – sharing views and ideas across Ireland from Universities, ITs and Colleges. The Uladh Colleges Comhairle Ceantair gave a presentation to the university cumainn from the other three provinces on the model which they have developed during the last year – showing the advantages of efficient communication between third level campuses and the pooling of resources in a particular geographic area. read full story / add a comment

The New York demonstrations are to be held on Wednesday 23 September and Thursday 24 September at 10 am, at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, First Ave. & 47th Street, Manhattan. The High Court has granted an injunction restraining SIPTU and the Irish Congress of Trade Union from distributing flyers about or publishing the personal details of people who have continued to work during a strike at the Marine Terminal company in Dublin Port. Mr Justice Feeney ruled that workers were entitled to use strong language including the word 'scab' during protests outside the company's gates. Sinn Féin and Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin in Lucan and Clondalkin held a day of action against the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty. Pickets were held at the constituency offices of Green party TD Paul Gogarty and Fianna Fail TD John Curran. Activists from Dublin Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin confronted Brian Cowen's entourage on Wednesday as the cabinet was due to sign off on the controversial National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) legislation. NAMA will make the taxpayer overpay for bad loans given by reckless banks to greedy developers. This is part of SHAC's (www.shac.net) 'Operation Liberation' - a special week of action against vivisection breeders. Charles River Laboratories, which is one of the biggest animal testing companies in the world, has two research facilities in Ireland. They are located in: Carrentrila, Ballina, Co. Mayo and Glenamoy, Co. Mayo. Charles River Labs. are a contract testing business, which means they will test anything, on any animal, for a price. In 1966 the Fianna Fail Government were labeled the “Mink Coat Government” by Deputy Sweetman in a Dail debate. Today they can as easily be labeled the “Mink Farm Government”. Every other political party except Fianna Fail has called for a ban on fur factory farms. Without Fianna Fail’s support there would be no fur factory farms in Ireland. Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin's Saturday stall became the centre of a protest today against the latest attack by the Fianna Fail/Green Government against education. Over thirty activists gathered at the GPO to distribute leaflets explaining the cuts. According to Dublin spokesperson, Marcas Ó Mhaoldomhnaigh, many parents have been hit with bills costing hundreds of euro for books and school uniforms. "Many schools are set to lose special needs assistants and other vital resources. This government did not invest properly in the education system during the boom years and now we are seeing school children and their parents paying for their mistakes, it is completely unacceptable. Free primary education will truly be a thing of the past if we allow our schools to be further stripped of resources." read full story / add a comment

Galway Shell to Sea group with the support of Afri and the community in the Erris area are organising a new petitioning initiative calling for a suspension of the work on the corrib gas project. Signatures will be gathered at public events and by e- mail.
