Amnesty International has warned of a ‘potential nightmare scenario’ in eastern Chad. Almost 500,000 people are at serious risk if the number of UN peacekeepers is reduced and they are no longer able to protect civilians. Education Minister Caitríona Ruane joined a large group of Ógra Shinn Féin members today at Down’s County Museum in Downpatrick, to launch Sinn Féin’s Youth Manifesto ‘Creating the Future’, for the upcoming Westminster election. The Museum was selected as a site of historical significance, it previously being home of the County Gaol where United Irishmen leader Thomas Russell was executed on 21 October 1803. The youth manifesto which was drafted by members of the party’s youth wing Ógra Shinn Féin forms the basis of the work and policies which Sinn Féin will be carrying out regards youth in the next 5 years. These include education, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, calling for the abolition of ASBO’s, road safety, youth job creation, creating affordable housing, and progressing Irish Unity. read full story / add a comment

Niall Harnett was today (Wednesday) sentenced to six months in Castlerea prison at Ballina Circuit court, for protests against Shell's proposed experimental pipeline. Mr Harnett had a sentence of six months imposed after refusing to undertake satisfactory community service. The sentence was in relation to a 'Reclaim the Beach' protest in the summer of 2008 where Mr Harnett went to the aid of another protestor who was being assaulted by Gardai. He also had a five month sentence confirmed by the court – these sentences will be served concurrently. Mr Harnett further had a two year driving ban affirmed. read full story / add a comment

Greyhound protection campaigners are holding demonstrations outside various venues on Dara O'Briain's UK tour after a racing dog, part "owned" by the Irish comedian, was fatally injured during a race at Dublin's Harolds Cross Stadium. The BBC is also being targetted, as the race was featured in an episode of its Three Men in a Boat programme, which amounted to a promotion of the cruel so-called "sport" of greyhound racing and where no mention of the death of the dog was made. read full story / add a comment

Irish neutrality and sovereignty are being violated by the active recruitment of young Irishmen into the British Army in Moyross, according to local Sinn Féin Councillor Maurice Quinlivan. The Pirate Party of Ireland was disheartened to learn that the government is currently in the planning stages of establishing arbitrary internet censorship. What form this censorship will take when it is finally rolled out is quite opaque, but it would most certainly result in the blocking of many websites. Such a system will be ineffective in its goals, produce perverse effects, impose substantial costs, and reduce freedom of speech. read full story / add a comment

---Corrib project has been imposed through 'harassment' of the local community--- 409 letters have been delivered from members of the community of Kilcommon to Shell's Belmullet offices today Monday. The letter outlines their refusal to meet with representatives of the company while Pat O'Donnell remains in jail and the imposition of the Corrib gas project continues without community consent. The letters detail a large number of grievances that the local community have with the imposition of the project, and state that people are refusing to meet with Shell while what “effectively amounts to ongoing and escalating physical and psychological harassement” continues in the area. The letters dismiss as hollow Shell's proposed 'consultation', in the context of the fact that the current and previous Managing Directors of the company have publicly stated that the project will not be changed in any way in response to community concerns. read full story / add a comment |
