Iran's Supreme Court has rejected Ja'far Kazemi's request to appeal against his death sentence. The sentence was imposed for his alleged participation in anti-government demonstrations and links with a banned organization. His sentence may be carried out at any time. Six other people with alleged links to the same organization are said to be under sentence of death. Ja'far Kazemi was arrested on 18 September 2009 and interrogated and possibly tortured for months in Evin prison in Tehran. He was accused of participating in protests which followed the disputed outcome of Iran's presidential election in June 2009, but was not accused of committing any violent acts; and for his alleged contact with banned opposition group the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). He was sentenced to death for "enmity against God", and is also believed to have been convicted of "propaganda against the system". On 26 April, he learned that his death sentence had been confirmed by an appeal court. A further appeal was apparently rejected in late July read full story / add a comment

According to a report disseminated by the International Committee against Execution, in addition to Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, at least 21 others in the Islamic Republic's prisons are living with the nightmare of a stoning conviction. At any moment, their sentences could be implemented. ‘“Whistleblower” exposed a hospital world of cover up and concealment that is still with alive. Symphysiotomy was as much an institutional abuse as invountary sterilisation. Survivors of symphysiotomy have called upon the Government to initiate an independent inquiry into these childbirth operations on the grounds that they amounted to medical malpractice. read full story / add a comment

Because of human rights omission New Zealand has suffered major social problems, some social statistics worse than other countries, at the bottom of the social scale but it is hidden from mainstream New Zealanders. Fear is pervasive and there is a sense of hoelessness which is holding back progress and adaptation to global changes. A focus on the truth rather than power politics and the 'money grab' will help overcome this. It has, in my opinion, modeled itself on the British class system permitting mass social class discrimination. read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication. Iran stoning case, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is at imminent risk of execution in Tabriz prison. Moreover, her well known human rights lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, is in prison in Turkey after having fled the country to evade arrest for his advocacy work. His wife remains in prison in Iran – held hostage – until he is remanded into the regime’s custody (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1652). Given Turkey’s close relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafaei can face deportation back to Iran even though he has applied for refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there. Campaigners are concerned about the safety of Mostafaei and his wife. We are also extremely concerned for Ashtiani’s life. The regime may be preparing to execute her within the next few days, particularly given that the Tabriz prosecutor has demanded her execution and is awaiting the Tehran high court’s confirmation (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1665). read full story / add a comment

The SpunOut.ie Academy of Activism, supported by the Huston Film School at NUIG, is a free training course for young people of different backgrounds who are passionate about making a difference in the world around them. For Immediate Publication. Two suicide bombings outside a mosque in Zahedan on Thursday 15 July 2010 have left scores dead and hundreds wounded. As well as the two suicide bombers and members of the Pasdaran Army, casualties included many ordinary people. The bombings have led to fears among the people and have allowed the Islamic regime to step up its militarisation of the city and of the whole region. The group Jundullah has claimed responsibility, publishing photos of two young people said to be the bombers. The group said the bombings were in retaliation for the recent execution of the group’s leader Abdolmalek Rigi, as well as in support of the “Sunni people”. read full story / add a comment

On July 1, 2010 the special police branch of the Indian state assassinated in cold blood, Azad, (Cherukuri Rajkumar) the spokesperson of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) having earlier forcefully abducted him and Hem Chandra Pandey, a freelance journalist accompanying him. Both were tortured and executed and their bodies dropped and left in a distant forest. Despite a 150,000 petition collected by patients and their families and extensive lobbying including a facebook campaign, government TDs would not accept amendments from Labour and FG which would have protected St Luke's and retained it as a public cancer hospital. Despite being on record as supporting the campaign to save St Luke's, John Gormley did not even appear at the Dail debate while constituency collegues Ruairi Quinn and Lucinda Creighton spoke up for St Luke's.
