The European Commission is to reopen the EU investigation into salmon and sea lice closed in September of 2012. The investigation was prompted by submissions from Salmon Watch Ireland and the Friends of the Irish Environment to the Commission in 2009. The closure of the investigation without the ‘express views’ of Inland Fisheries Ireland which the Department of Agriculture denied it held led to a series of ‘Requests for Redress for Maladministration’ lodged by Friends of the Irish Environment to two Irish Government Departments and the European Commission. read full story / add a comment

WikiLeaks released the secret negotiated draft text for the entire TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Intellectual Property Rights Chapter. The TPP is the largest-ever economic treaty, encompassing nations representing more than 40 per cent of the world’s GDP. The WikiLeaks release of the text comes ahead of the decisive TPP Chief Negotiators summit in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 19-24 November 2013. The chapter published by WikiLeaks is perhaps the most controversial chapter of the TPP due to its wide-ranging effects on medicines, publishers, internet services, civil liberties and biological patents. Residents and members of the Anti Austerity Alliance are delaying work on the installation of meters by Irish Water in the Huntstown Wood estate. Speaking at the protest, local Huntstown resident, Bernadette Rynne, said: " We find it incredible that they are digging up our footpaths to charge us for water when there has been a water shortage and the obvious thing to do is fix the leaks. In the afternoon of the 2 November, the peasant leader César García, president of the community association (Junta de Acción Comunal) of Cajon La Leona, was killed in cold blood by a shot to the head as he returned to his homestead with his wife and son [1]. García had become visible through his participation in the Environmental and Rural Committee of Cajamarca for the defence of life, water and food (Comité Ambiental y Campesino de Cajamarca por la Defensa de la Vida, el Agua y el Alimento), an organisation which has been leading the community´s struggle against the large-scale extractive project La Colosa. This open-cast mine has been denounced in Tolima because of the disastrous impact it would have on the community and the environment. The community of Tolima has expressed its rejection of the project through a series of massive demonstrations in defence of water and life, as well as through a popular consultation which took place in the municipality of Piedras on 28 July. A Riot of Our Own: A Symposium on The Clash in Belfast: Call for Papers University of Ulster, Belfast Campus, Northern Ireland June 20-21 2014 In the 1970s, with the Troubles at their height, touring musicians were usually unwilling to play in Northern Ireland. One of the few international acts prepared to break what was in effect the cultural boycott of the region was The Clash. In October 1977, the iconic punk band was scheduled to open the Get Out of Control tour with a concert in the Ulster Hall in Belfast city centre. A few hours before the group was due to take the stage, however, the gig was cancelled for reasons that remain disputed and sparking chaotic scenes that are often recalled as amounting to a ‘riot’. The amount of methane released into the atmosphere during shale gas drills is disputed, with one new industry-funded report suggesting it could be less than previously thought.
But asked whether there should be mandatory testing for methane leaks at European shale drills, Jos Delbeke, the director of the European Commission’s climate department told EurActiv: “We must know what the methane emissions are going to be.” “Either the companies are going to put it on the table or a regulation is going to come at the European level,” he added. “I leave that open.” Delbeke was speaking on 3 October at a presentation for a new methane emissions report by Dr David Allen, organised by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) in Brussels. Methane is a greenhouse gas at least 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a shorter 100-year period. Scientists believe that it could be particularly dangerous trigger for global warming feedback loops. The issue of how to regulate it could be crucial, as Brussels weighs the wisdom of a legislative package for shale gas, ahead of an announcement planned for this December. The EU executive could decide on a standalone instrument such as a new directive, amendments to existing legislation, or ‘soft guidance’ to industry in the form of voluntary obligations. As a taster of what lies ahead, the European parliament will next week vote on forcing shale gas firms to undertake Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) before drills can begin. read full story / add a comment

His talk will be based on his latest book, Cuba Under Siege: American Policy, the Revolution and Its People. In it, Bolender explores how Cuban society has been affected by 50 years of ‘non stop hostility from the world’s most powerful nation’. He offers extensive historical analysis, firsthand interviews and expert comment. Most significantly, perhaps, Bolender puts the blockade of Cuba into the historical military context of the tactic of siege and analyses the psychological impacts of this on the besieged population, with some remarkable insights from historical parallels. Ireland could and should have a Universal Pension for everyone over 65. it could be paid for principally by standard rating the current tax-break for private pensions. More than 80% of benefit of the current tax break goes to the 20% with highest earnings. A Universal Pension would be simpler, fairer and more just as well as being sustainable in the decades ahead. No existing pensioner would lose out and many would experience an increase in the Universal Pension. In particular, those adults aged 66 years and older, in respect of whom reduced payments are now made due to their status as ‘Qualified Adults’, would receive a Universal Pension in their own right. read full story / add a comment

The recent use of chemical weapons in Damascus is without a doubt an appalling atrocity causing untold damage to human life and creating panic in the area. There can be no doubt that this was a horrifying attack which increases the already high death toll of over 100,000 people with over 1 million people displaced so far. At this point there is no definitive evidence as to who carried out this attack. As UN inspectors continue their investigation in Damascus, the US and her allies move closer to a military intervention into Syria. It is now being reported that the evidence of the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons has been supplied by Israeli military intelligence. Reminiscent of the Blair/Bush Weapons of Mass Destruction excuse for intervention, this convenient intelligence escalates the likelihood of a US military intervention in Syria. read full story / add a comment

Galway, August 22, 2013 - On Saturday, August 24th, at 2:00 PM, animal rights activists will be on Grafton street, Dublin as part of a global day of protests for animal rights. They will hold synchronized street theater at several locations, including McDonald’s, for its sale of animals as food, and Bernardo's furs. Strong visuals are expected.
