Bring banners, Roller Blades, Skateboards, Kytes, Musical Instruments etc. There is to be a protest outside City Hall on Monday the 8th starting at around 4pm and continuing until around 7pm to protest Galway Corporations proposed Bye-Laws. These bye-Laws will outlaw leafletting, and place major restrictions on other activities such as Public Assembly (you will need written permission for assemblies of over 100 and they may be banned in certain areas). Also, according to draft of the Parks and Open Spaces bye-laws

Written permission will also be required for making a Film or TV programme.

You, of course are convinced this is just "music" and "political" and so most of the groups listed fit into one or the other category.
But it appears that instead of knocking groups one at a time (figuring they won't come to each other's aid) they appear to have made the cardinal tactical error of taking on everybody at once.
WELL --- get everybody on board. Get the groups inot sports, the skateboarders, swimmers, fishers, kite fliers, etc. Forget for a moment that YOU consider these activities unimportant. THEY probably feel the same about your silly leaflets. The point is the town rulers are out to control ALL of you so fight them together.
Attempts to bring in these draconian laws were already defeated in Dublin a few years ago with the help of a similar protest.
Hope ye get a very large turnout and this protest is just as successful.
The Taliban did that too, you know. What's next - compulsory burkha wearing for women over 12?
Joe's point about the ban on revisionist thought on this website as being hypocitical - I guess he has an argument (albeit it may not hold up).
I thought "Beady and Beardy town" AKA Galway[known by the above description because of the large amounts of adornements effected by both sexes in that town] Was very liberal.what with the university and the alt lifestyles up there!!!
Well at least you are doing somthing worthwhile with this demo .Go for it.
.
Hi All,
Des Bonass, who was in Galway a few weeks back, spoke to a meeting about their campaign in Dublin and how they defeated similar proposals there. I think that the bye-laws as they stand will be defeated because of the amount of people against them, and even the normally conservative print media are giving space to the campiagn against them and making criticisms of the laws. It has also been covered on TV3 and TG4. As Mike said they made a mistake taking on so many groups and interests together. And the section on needing permission for filming will only get the media's back up.
I do think that they will try to amend the laws though and try to sneak some of the proposals in some way, so we will have to keep an eye on them.
Keith - I had forgotten that the Taliban had made that illegal. I might use that point on a radio interview I am doing on Monday. Can you imagine getting arrested for flying a kite?
Mike - I am not sure where you are coming from. When you say You I am not sure do you mean me, the campaign or the people reading the site. I don't think there is any conflict between skateboarders, rollerbladers etc. and the campaign (and some of the people invoved in the campaign also take part in some of these other activities.). These activies are specfically mentioned on the leaflet. There is one omission though, which I only noticed last night. There is a specific clause in the Parks and Opend Spaces Bye-laws about sporting activity which is very broad. This is:
'No person, club or organisation shall organise or take part in any field game,
athletic pursuit or other sport save in such areas as the Council designate for such
purpose, and then only subject to and in accordance with such conditions as may be
imposed by the Council from time to time, or as directed by and employee of the
Council.'
If there is a new leaflet produced I am going to suggest that a reference to this be added in.
Regarding the list of people and organisations, it is wide rangeing though obviously there are many others who would probably support the campaign. New names are being added on as it goes on. If you know of any other groups who you think could be added to the list you can e-mail me. There might be a Skateboarders group. We can ask them on Monday.
Bye the way this is is what can happen if we don't do what we are told, if these laws are passed, ( a little too much 'of the opinion that a person is committing or has committed an offence' and arresting without a warrant for my taste).
'Any person who contravenes a provision of these byelaws shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €1,270.
If the contravention of a provision of any of these bye-laws is continued after conviction, the person causing the contravention shall be guilty of a further offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €127 per day.
A person who obstructs or impedes, or refuses to comply with a request of an employee of the Council acting hi the exercise of the functions conferred on him/her by these byelaws shall be guilty of an offence.
Where an employee of the Council is of the opinion that a person is committing or has committed an offence under these byelaws, the employee of the Council may demand the name and address of such person and if that demand is refused or the person gives a name or address which is false or misleading, that person shall be guilty of an offence.
Where a member of the Garda Siochana is of the opinion that a person is commiting or has committed an offence to which these byelaws relate, that member may arrest, or arrange for the arrest of, the person without warrant'
I dont think anybody need worry about these laws if they are decent and respectful persons. However, when mobs are bussed in bringing all sorts of scumbags (Like what happened in Shannon) then they get what they deserve. Unfortunately we have too many in Ireland who are willing to abuse the term 'peaceful protest'. I was sickened by some of the wasters that arrived at one of the Shannon protests, determined to cause trouble. I distanced myself from that outfit.
Labour in government introduced these type of laws ,its laughable for them to pretend to support Civil Liberties. They cant wait to get into coalition with FF or FG and their Green pals.
"I dont think anybody need worry about these laws if they are decent and respectful persons."
Decent and respectful persons do play myusic and congregate and discuss things in public!
OR are you saying and suggesting the dishonest practice of selective enforcement?
What exactly did labour do in government that offended your civil liberties?this would be a labour party full of members of amnesty international and the iccl.the good old sp on about civil liberties.....sorry i had to take time out to laugh.
The SP moan about being attacked yet this is the fourth thread in a week which they are prepared to derail so that they can get a few digs in at Labour.
What is the Talented Mister Cahill doing about this?
Well said Gaston Emille you're the only one who's spoken any sense on this. As you say yourself nobody who is a decent and respectful person has anything at all to fear from these very sensible and reasonable proposals. Of course as you say the trouble comes from the bussing in of good for nothing idlers, troublemakers and scumbags made up of a loony left coaltion of trotskyites, stalinists and anarchists together with stinking, smelly, good for nothing hippies. The sixties are over man thank God or are you all so stoned out that you haven't noticed.
How exactly do you think you are advancing this campaign by attacking the Labour Party? This is an issue that people can unify around, their position on coalition, the EU, The North are irrelevant. The proposed bye laws will be used against the SP, SWP, SF, GP, LP, WP, WSM and many campaigning groups.
Crap about the LPs position on coalition with FG has nothing to do with the campaign.
I think its an impersonation.
