Galway City Council is trying to criminalise the street distribution of leaflets and the right to free assembly. The City Council will vote on a proposal to ban leaflet distribution from the streets of Galway under the guise of a litter byelaw, and to only allow public gatherings under permit. This is actually attacking our democratic rights to free speech and assembly.
Many groups and organisations use street leafleting as a vital organ to inform, educate and network with the people of Galway. The very nature of many of these groups means that it is not an option to pay for advertising in the media as a means of communication, and articles/letters submitted are subject to editorial boards deciding what is "suitable" reading material for their readers. The bye-law proposal only allows street distribution during the period of political elections- is democracy now to be confined purely to conventional politics with its ballot- box timing, say once every 4 years? EXTRACT: The effects of the Diageo ownership became clear in July, 2000, when Guinness announced plans to close the brewing and packaging plants in Dundalk, located just north of Dublin. The move came as a shock to workers and the community of Dundalk. This was the first Guinness plant closing ever to occur in Ireland. The closing eliminated over 300 jobs in a small community, as management justified the move as part of plan to remain globally competitive.

Not for the first time, the Socialist Workers Party has issued a call for debate around the idea of uniting the various Socialist activists, groups and Parties in Ireland. EXTRACT: "The Socialist Workers Party and the Socialist Party are the two major radical socialist parties in Ireland. Along with a number of smaller groups and non-aligned individuals they have played the leading role in mobilising people in the anti war movement, anti capitalist protests, the campaigns against the bin tax and in support of striking workers. However, on their own, neither the SWP, SP nor any of the smaller socialist organisations can offer a viable alternative at a national level. But as part of a united socialist bloc the SWP, SP and others could create a credible pole of attraction for people looking for a genuinely radical left alternative."
