international / summit mobilisations Tuesday December 13, 2005 21:32 by Ed Lee

An estimated 5000-10,000 (still preliminary) protestors gathered in Hong Kong's Victoria Park and marched their way to the Exhibition Centre where the WTO 6th Ministerial Conference has just begun. Protestors from all over south-east Asia expressed their solidarity with cultural gatherings and workshops. But the most hyped group are the South Korean farmers who made headline news when Lee Kyeong-hae commited suicide at Cancun 2003.

Only a short hour's march from Victoria Park to the assembly area near the Exhibition Centre, the loud but peaceful rally went through one of Hong Kong's busiest cosmomopolitan areas -- Causeway Bay and Wan Chai. With 9,000 police on duty, a third of Hong Kong's force, navy riot helmets and shields were as common as the ordinary spectator.

150,000 Workers March Against Exploitation

Today, December 9th, 150,000 workers took to the streets all across Ireland in the biggest working class mobilisation since the 1970's. They were protesting against the treatment of their fellow workers in Irish Ferries, who the company want to replace en masse with hyper-exploited immigrant labour, earning less than half the minimum wage. The protest's aims were more broadly defined by ICTU to include a general opposition to exploitation, racism and 'the race to the bottom'. it clearly struck a chord.

Dublin 50-100,000 march

From the banners: "Unity is Strength ... "Polish against exploitation" ... "divided we are sunk" ... "Sink That Idea - 3 euro ph" ... "Bertie We're Not Impressed" ... "INTO Stop Exploitation" ... "Belfast Unemployed Centre .. Health Dignity Peace" ... "An Injury to one is the Concern of All" ...

"In our thousands we fell in behind the banners of our unions. TEEU, SIPTU, IMPACT, IWU, CWU. etc a few Starry Ploughs, Anarchist flags, Socialist party banner, Labour, Shinners.... The speakers on Connolly Hall played Luke Kelly. People shook hands met old friends made new ones. Men and women who had know hard struggle to beat poverty and oppression mingled with the children of the Celtic Tiger. There was grim determination on faces all around."

Galway: "1000+ brave the rain"

"Listening to Michael D. powering it out, Countess Markievicz's description of Big Jim Larkin speaking during the industrial dispute of 1913 came to mind: "Sitting there, listening to Larkin, I realised that I was in the presence of something that I never came across before, some great primeval force rather than a man, a tornado, a storm-driven wave, the rush into life of spring, and the blasting breath of autumn, all seemed to emanate from the power that spoke."

Limerick Report: 10,000 - 15,000

"To be honest, I was afraid that the whole thing was gonna be a bit of a damp squib, with just a few union heads around the place, but when I arrived at ten to one it was already obvious that it was gonna be big" Read more from "St John's" report here

Thousands also marched in Sligo, Limerick, Athlone, Rosslare & Waterford

We have heard estimates for the crowds in Sligo (3,000) and Limerick (20,000) but these are not confirmed.

Today, Friday December 9th, the Irish trade union movement is mobilising for a national day of action. This protest aims to defend the jobs of the Irish Ferries workers and to say no to the exploitation of immigrant labour and the race to the bottom that this type of capitalist greed will lead to. This blatant attack on workers' conditions has struck a chord with Irish workers across the country and today's demonstration promises to be the biggest Trade Union protest in decades.

Help Indymedia Cover the Protest Indymedia Previous Coverage Statements & Actions in Support of Workers

We will be reporting on the national day of action in support of the Irish Ferries workers. Our volunteers will be on the streets covering the march and updating our front page with breaking news and stories throughout the day. Please help us as much as you can. We need you to send us your photos and to write your impressions of the march. There are several ways in which you can get us your news as it happens.

This dispute has been brewing for the last few months since Irish Ferries announced their plans to reflag their ships in Cyprus, fire their entire workforce and replace them with immigrant workers earning less than half the Irish minimum wage.

The action by Irish Ferries has been roundly condemned by the Left. The Taoiseach has criticised Irish Ferries but has taken no action. On the bosses' side, disgracefully, the Irish Times claimed that the Trade Unions were engaging in "macho posturing" by trying to defend their members

We have also produced a PDF print version of the coverage on this site which you can download, print out and distribute on the march.
