New licences are about to be issued for the Oil and Gas fields off Donegal without resolving the terrible situation in Rossport. Demand a freeze on the Corrib Gas refinery project until the people of Ireland are consulted about whether we want to continue giving our gas and oil away to Shell.

Lesbian and political activist, Ailbhe Smith was the Grand Marshal of the largest Pride Parade to date in Dublin. Dublin Pride is one of many parades taking place world-wide to commemorate the 40th anniversary Stonewall Riots of New York 1969.

Pride 2009 was the biggest held in Dublin to date with up to 12,000 people taking part. Ailbhe Smith was this years Grand Marshal - the first lesbian to do so in 26 years. She led off with whip in hand, saving it for the Government. The streets were thronged as passers by smiled, photographed and cheered. It's an incredible day when people can take to the streets and celebrate sexuality and diversity.

Extract: One of the activists, Eoin Lawless, addressing the court following his remanding, stated that he believed he should be afforded the legal presumption of innocence before being proven guilty. Lawless was one of the activists arrested for merely crossing the road, and was leaving the area after being directed by a Public Order garda. Judge Devin's replied to Lawless' defence by inquiring, “Did you take up a law degree?” She then refused Lawless' defence argument, and remanded him to Castlerea.
This evening (Monday June 29th), Judge Mary Devins jailed seven Shell to Sea protesters at a special sitting of Ballina District Court. The seven protesters were arrested yesterday along with two others who were released on bail. The four women and three men who were jailed were remanded to appear at court this Friday, 3 July at 10:30 in the morning. The four women's cases will next be held in Court 44 in the Four Courts, while the three men's cases will be held in Harristown. Of the nine arrested yesterday, five were arrested for a lock-on, one for a climbing a tripod, and thee others for walking across a road. A full report on the circumstances of these arrests is available here
None of the protesters had previous convictions, yet they were refused normal bail conditions. The prosecuting garda sought to have all of the protesters remanded and Judge Devins agreed with the guard in all but two of the cases. The Judge predictably sided with the prosecution's argument that the activists were likely to re-offend, and some of the protesters, with overseas addresses, may not turn up for court. To date all Shell to Sea activists have showed up to court.

In any country with a half way critical media, the last few months would have been disastrous for Shell. In a crucial period in Shell’s imposition of an experimental gas pipeline on the people of Erris it emerges that Michael Dwyer, one of the security guards on this project, was part of an attempt to trigger a civil war in Bolivia. Soon after that it became clear that at least three others who had worked as security guards at the Shell compound had travelled to Bolivia with Dwyer and were wanted there for questioning. Some, it emerged, had links to fascist organizations in Eastern Europe. At least 156 private security personnel work on what Shell calls the 'Corrib Project' accompanied, according to the Irish Times, by up to “Several hundred Gardaí and the Naval Service .. with the Naval Service deploying one and “possibly” two patrol ships”. (1) The level of force being deployed to impose the Shell pipeline project on the local population is a testimony to the long running resistance of the people of Erris, a resistance that so far has not been broken by dozens of arrests, violence and the most vitriolic of attacks from paid hacks in the mainstream media. At the time of writing everyone is preparing for the return of the pipe laying ship, the Soltaire. In advance of its return strange events have occurred in the dead of night. One Shell to Sea protester, Willie Corduff, required hospitalization after an encounter with masked men at the Shell compound at 4am on Thursday April 23rd. The fishing boat of another key Shell to Sea activist, Pat O’Donnell, was boarded at 2am on Thursday 11th June by four masked and armed men who proceed to sink the boat, leaving the two men on board to fend for themselves. What is striking is the almost complete failure of the Irish media to investigate any of these stories in a serious way or to explore the elements that link events in Bolivia and Erris. |
