Niall with supporters leaving Cloverhill Prison

Niall Harnett has been released from custody following confusing circumstances involving a temporary release of sorts last Friday 14th and a withdrawn 'mute' application at the High Court in Cloverhill today Monday 17th August.

Niall was given what he thought was a 'temporary or technical weekend release' on Friday last at Castlerea, pending his court appearance this morning.

“Apologies to everyone for not declaring that I was given what can only be described as a 'technical' release last Friday, but I was confused as to what to do over the weekend and thought it better just to lie low and hook up with Carol to see how she was getting on. But it's great to be out now, in any case”, said Niall

At a hearing in Dublin District Court today, Judge McMahon dismissed the case against two animal rights activists arrested outside Barnardo’s fur shop on Lower Grafton Street in Dublin on 22 May this year.

Robert Sevik was charged under section 24 of the Public Order Act (refusing to give his name and address), and Edmond Long was charged under section 19 of the same act (obstruction of a peace officer).

Proceedings were instituted by Garda Paul Tallon, B16, of Harcourt Street station. The two men defended themselves. Seán Ryan acted as a McKenzie friend to both co-defendants.

In 2005 the Dutch people overwhelmingly said ‘no’ to the constitutional treaty, just as the French had done some days before. In contrast to the Irish, this was the first time the Dutch people had been allowed a say about the future of Europe; and they made it clear that they didn’t like the way it was heading. Did they want to get out of the EU? No - the Dutch are big supporters of EU membership, just like the Irish, but they don’t want Europe to develop into a federal superstate.

Dolphin's Barn Community Gardeners

Nurturing and reclaiming our city, our commons, our communities

Community Gardens are emerging throughout Dublin city. These small projects have large narratives. When we create community gardens we build alternative ways that our cities operate and can be made sustainable. We build positive spaces, social spaces and community. We address land use, workers rights and learn to collectively organise. We seed save, skill share, reclaim lost knowledge and recycle. We re-establish a relationship with the cycles of life, with nature and become aware of our deep connection to our environment and each other. Community Gardens are radical spaces and the good news is that they are on the increase.

Over the last 10 years the destructive development of Ireland has been driven by economic greed with little thought for communities, nature and our collective future. Our ecological foot print increased dramatically. In 2006 we were top of the list on our rubbish per capita per year of 31 countries surveyed in the EU. Our resource consumption and our waste creation had increased exponentially.
