On Monday 14th June the Revolutionary Anarcha Feminist Group hosted a discussion in Seomra Spraoi on the many uses and dangers of 'new media', the possibilities for positive change and 'radical democracy' via the internet, the dilemma of 'internet neurosis' where feelings of vulnerability and fears of exploitation need to be negotiated in order to utilize the internet as activists, artists and self-publishers and the potential of the internet as a force for oppression and control. ... read full story / add a comment

Joe Duffy invited two protesters, Holly, and Leah, who were at the protest at the Dáil on Tuesday the 18th of May, on to his Radio show on RTE. These two protesters were contacted because they had been wearing fake blood, in an attempt to highlight that the Gardaí had taken quite violent action, including bludgeoning protesters with steel batons, against people who were fighting against public service cuts - indeed fighting against the very cuts that the Gardaí themselves will suffer. ... read full story / add a comment

The McCarthy or “Bord Snip Nua” report on public spending outlined a range of proposed cuts in government expenditure. Of the €5.3b in possible savings, it can be safely said that at least €4b of this (and probably more) targets the working class. Indeed, a full third of the cuts are aimed at pensioners and unemployed. In the private sector, attacks on our class continue in the form of pay cuts, short time and lay-offs. ... read full story / add a comment

Introduction Is the spectre of mass unemployment a permanent feature in post-boom Ireland? Ireland’s economic boom was predicated on a policy of low tax entry to the European free market as well as an unsustainable housing boom. The Irish state’s response to the global crisis seems to be deflationary policies in a ‘race to the bottom’ between peripheral and semi-peripheral economies. The weakness of indigenous Irish capitalism and the living costs in debt ridden Ireland do not leave much room for growth in private sector employment. The private sector has never been able to provide sustainable full employment in the history of the state. This article explores this thesis and maintains that workers should not depend on the private sector and its political servants to provide decent employment for all. ... read full story / add a comment

International companies and foundations are pushing for a "Green Revolution" in Africa - promoting a model which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and represents the kind of "same box thinking" which has left up to 1 billion people in the world hungry. It is time for us to recognise that the system some believed in so blindly through the Celtic Tiger years is in fact causing increasing poverty, hunger and desperation at its “other end”. Around the world, countries and peoples are looking at ways to fight back. ... read full story / add a comment

Capitalism is afraid to let the depression go its full course to thereby cleanse the system because of the potential threat from the working class. Indeed capitalism has become so contradictory that even a very deep downturn may not save it from deep stagnation. The cyclical downturn is now no longer sufficient as it would have been in the 19th century. Now we need cyclical world wars. ... read full story / add a comment

“Alfonso Cano” saw his first statement as current leader of FARC published widely last week. As FARC leader he denied giving prior electoral campaign donations or current administration sweeteners to the Bolivarian presidency of Rafael Correa in Ecuador. Further he denied receiving arms shipments from Venezuela. The communiqué from FARC is significant not only in consideration of the Colombian state decision to host US military bases despite the oratorical fury of Venezuela & more strategical alarm & objection of Brazil. But also because today Ecuador’s Rafeal Correa has accepted Colombian Uribe’s freshest apology for Latin America's last military incursion on March 1st 2008. I would like to bring readers through the facts and foibles so that they do not fall into the trap of thinking Latin America is as some suggest in an arms race & so that they also understand the new role (if new at all) being played by Colombia. ... read full story / add a comment |
