It appears that our government yesterday got their shit together in an attempt to avoid further discussion of their inadequate response to the threat posed to the health and wellbeing of Irish Citizens by releasing to the media an update on their 'emergency plan'. What a spoiler - 'the helpline will be up and running Monday'. They appear to suggest that even in the event of an accident that there would be no evacuation of people involved. Dundalk would be evacuated - that's for sure - whether or not the government were involved. I see arrests at central bank in the near future. Fallout Filter Method To make a fallout filter, punch holes in the bottom of a large bucket, and put a layer of gravel in the bucket about 1 1/2 inches high. Cover the gravel with a towel cut in a circle slightly larger than the bucket. Cover towel with soil and place the filter over a large container. Pour contaminated water through. Then, disinfect the filtered water using one of the methods described previously. Change the soil in your filter after every 50 quarts of water. ... read full story / add a comment

A reactor meltdown could occur within one hour if a commercial passenger jet hits a nuclear power plant, according to a new Greenpeace report which examines the vulnerability of nuclear power plants to plane crashes in Germany. Nuclear expert, Dr Helmut Hirsch, says in the report that in a worse case scenario of a commercial passenger jet hitting a nuclear plant, the reactor's containment would be breached, the cooling systems would fail, and within a very short period of time less than one hour - the reactor core would begin to meltdown. ... read full story / add a comment

Four-year-old Ahmed Khader's heart raced with fear; the children of the neighborhood told him that we were the Israelis back in his home. The eight of us were not occupation soldiers. Rather we were foreign civilians (5 Americans, 2 Belgian and one Irish) who had come to the Balata Refugee Camp to express our solidarity with the people who had been invaded, terrorized and pillaged on a 4-day raid of their home; a refugee camp; by the Israeli military. ... read full story / add a comment

There is currently a difference of a mere 10,000 votes in the referendum to amend the constitution on abortion. The NO campaign are at this point in time ahead by a majority of 50.72%, compared to 49.28%, almost as tight as the divorce referendum in '95. The disappointing turnout is being blamed by the YES campaign for the result at present. Four latest Dublin results: Dun Laoighre 68.23% no, Dub South 65% no Dub west 63.73% no Dub South West 64%, shows the urban constituencies are clearly against the amendment. The country is split almost completely in an East-West, Urban-Rural divide. The big turnout in Dublin made a huge impact on the figures as they stand. The NO vote is expected to outweigh the YES by a tiny minority, as they await one Galway constituency who is the last left to contribute figures, the figures will be in at approx 4pm. ... read full story / add a comment

The following is a copy of part of a message sent to me. A few people from the Irish west papua support group are giving a talk at NUIGalway on tuesday, 12th march. The situation with West Papua is the people are some of the last stone age tribal people left in the world, however the indonesian government are killing and torturing them with the approval of the US and UK. They are trying to protect their land (which is rich in minerals) and heritage and culture. The latest info on the situation is below and you can catch updates and more info at the NUIG talks. ... read full story / add a comment |
