Monday 25th July Shell intended to begin constructing a permanent compound in Aughoose from which to begin laying the offshore pipeline. However in a statement to Midwest radio Shell commented that works had been 'severely impeded' on Monday. Between a 5½ hour tripod blockade in the morning and loads of protesters on bicycles and on foot, the roads remained shut down for quite a lot of the day. ... read full story / add a comment

Veteran Republican, and one of the Old Bailey bombers, Marian Price has been charged in connection with the shootings of two British soldiers in Massereene barracks in Antrim in March 2009. Her lawyer, Peter Corrigan has called this an abuse of Process as no new evidence has emerged in the 18 months when she was first questioned on the same charges.

Over the past number of weeks Eoghan Harris has been uttering more than the usual amount of drivel in relation to the 1919-21 War of independence. Contemporary events have been dragged in week on week to promote the moronic view that the IRA systematically attacked Protestants during the War and after it.

No notion is too ludicrous in pursuit of the deeply reactionary and frankly sectarian campaign aimed at undermining the IRA’s anti-sectarian pursuit of independence between 1919-21. ... read full story / add a comment

Early Thursday morning at 3am Mayo County Council illegally removed a caravan from private property in Aughoose, opposite Shell's temporary compound. People from the Rossport Solidarity Camp were woken by the noise and ran down to the road in pyjamas to find their caravan being loaded onto a flatbed trailer. The gardaí present said to "take it up with the County Council" if there was a problem. When questioned as to why they were doing it at 3am if the removal of the caravan was lawful, there was no response. ... read full story / add a comment

Over 60 people attended a meeting of those opposed to proposed gas fracking in the north-west at the Mayflower in Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim on the night of July 12th. The major concerns raised at the meeting were organisational, with the –still nameless- group agreeing to the formation of a ‘core group which isn’t called a core group’.

Editor: Fracking is technology used for extracting natural gas trapped in rocks underground and is the process of forcing liquids and solids into the rock and forcing it to crack and thereby releasing the gas. Fracking liquids can cause pollution and the process of cracking the rock can significantly drop the water table and dry out huge areas. It has many other problems including exponential fall-off in production from year 1. ... read full story / add a comment

It is this time of year again when the spectre of sectarianism and division comes to the fore in the north of Ireland. It is a time when communities, kerbstones and poles are marked and carved into territory. There are those who will be living in fear and silenced from speaking out while the rest of us are told to turn the other check in the interests of peace and stability. It is unfortunate, if perhaps somewhat inevitable, that the now annual battles around the ‘marching season’ fall along religious lines. The Orange parades are being used to test the supposed 'neutrality' of the northern regime and the PSNI in particular. The losing side in this dangerous game however is likely to be the working class, as the confrontations and the sectarian attacks that occur around the Orange marches drive people further into ‘their own’ communities.

Thirty one prosecutions of an innocent man, followed by perjury, cover up, scandalous conduct by judges, barristers, solicitors, Courts Service and DPP's office, assaults by Gardaí etc - there was a long story to tell about the shameless judicial system in Ireland outside our Houses of Parliament two days ago.

This story is one that could also come under the Rights and Freedom heading as well as under "Crime and Justice". Kevin Tracey has been the victim of criminal behaviour but he has also been deprived of his human rights and of freedom to live a normal life with his family in peace. ... read full story / add a comment
