Today members of Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) held a hugely eye catching event outside of Brown Thomas on Grafton Street in Dublin to held push the campaign. With two activists posing ‘dead’ inside coffins whilst clutching signs reading “Brown Thomas – Fur Is Dead” other members of ARAN also held posters reading “Your Fur Had A Face” and others held our synonymous animal rights banner “Speak Out For Animal Rights” this banner continues to appear at various ARAN events around the country.

In a stirring and far ranging speech to the Sinn Féin Ard fheis at the RDS on Saturday evening, Gerry Adams called for a restoration of the Stormont Assembly, saying that the lesson of recent history in the North is clear: The British direct rule ministers need to be sent home.

In the 26 counties he called for changes in the health, housing, education, drugs policies and also called for rural regeneration.

Across the island, he said, there is still a growing inequality between the richest and the poorest, in health, education and in job and career opportunity.

There is still, he reminded the audience, partition and foreign occupation. ... read full story / add a comment

Article 12 of the UN International Covenant on Economics, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) provides the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standards of mental health. This right is the central human dignity of the person. Principles for the protection of persons with mental health - the MI principles were adopted by the UN in 1991 and provide standards in relation to informed consent of treatment. Protection of confidentiality standards - the rights of people in mental health facilities and the provision of resources. This principle is the right of everyone without of exception to the best available mental health care.

I ask the question tonight - with our economy alledgedly booming - why is our suicide crisis representative of such a shambles particularly in area of mental health care? ... read full story / add a comment

The Union of Students in Ireland organised today a protest about the blood ban operated by the Department of Health on Gay men.

It is now widely accepted that the best way to ensure a safe blood supply is to refuse blood from anyone engaged in high risk behaviour - rather than the current situation where hetrosexuals engaged in high risk promiscuous sexual activity will have their blood accepted while gay men involved low risk monogamous relationships will have their blood refused. ... read full story / add a comment
