Sorry about the short notice of this announcement. As part of ongoing solidarity work with the striking Fire Brigade Union workers the Belfast Local of Organise! - ASF will be supporting the picket line at Central Station (that's Fire Station), opposite the Limelight on Ormeau Avenue. This will be followed with a stall and fundraising in Belfast city centre for the striking fire-fighters hardship fund. We would urge anyone who can get to the picket line to show solidarity to do so and would also ask for assistance with fundraising in the city centre. Solidarity is strength. Far-right BNP lands surprise council seat - The far-right British National Party has taken a council seat in northwest England in a surprise by-election victory. The BNP, which already holds three council seats in the area, won the Mill Hill seat in Blackburn on Thursday night with a majority of just 16 votes. After a recount, BNP candidate Robin Evans won the seat with 578 votes to Labour's 562, against 505 for the Liberal Democrats and 154 for the Conservatives. Turnout was 39 percent. The result sparked fears among mainstream parties that the BNP could make further advances in the northwest, scene of inter-racial rioting last summer. ... read full story / add a comment
