Invasion force pushes into Iraq US and British troops have been trying to secure Iraq's southern oil fields US and British troops advanced deep into Iraq early on Friday. US Marines have reached Iraq's only deep-water port at Umm Qasr in the south-east, having overcome some early resistance as they crossed the border from Kuwait. British troops also say they have taken control of key oil installations on the al-Faw peninsula. Fierce fighting has been reported around the big oil fields in northern Iraq, which US special forces are trying to secure, according to Western intelligence. ... read full story / add a comment

Even if the Iraqi president is killed or captured, could the American people still be facing years of war, in Iraq or elsewhere? The issue was raised in Israel well before the assault began, prompted by remarks earlier this week by former prime minister Shimon Peres. "The war in Iraq is just the beginning," Peres told Israel Channel One Television. "Problems of the first magnitude can be expected therafter, as well: Iran, North Korea, and Libya. ... read full story / add a comment

America's $400bn war bill The US is spending more on this war than it raises in taxes, paving the way for a nasty surprise for its taxpayers, writes Randeep Ramesh Thursday March 20, 2003 War costs, but it is unclear who will pick up the tab. George Bush is not financing this campaign through taxation. Instead the president is cutting taxes - sending a welfare cheque to the wealthy - and raising military spending. The slowdown in the American economy has seen many states, who have to balance their budgets, cut back on social spending. The White House made it clear that there would be no federal bail out for these programmes. The president is reheating Reaganomics - cutting back on welfare, overcompensating with defence spending and offering big tax cuts to the rich at the expense of the poor. ... read full story / add a comment

Region braces for red alert, war Plans: Agencies anticipate possible terror; ports, other facilities to be guarded. By Bill Hillburg From our Washington Bureau WASHINGTON Should war with Iraq erupt, Southern Californians could find themselves living in a world of restricted travel, constrained trade, closed schools and public buildings, canceled events and hypersecurity. "It certainly would be incumbent upon us to take into consideration military involvement as we determined the level of protection we needed for homeland security. We'd be foolish if we didn't,' said Homeland Defense Secretary Tom Ridge. The nation Monday moved to condition orange (a high threat of terrorist attack) shortly after President Bush gave Saddam Hussein 48 hours to leave Iraq or face U.S. military action. A move to condition red (severe risk of attack) is not being ruled out. ... read full story / add a comment

Israel's top government censor has warned Web sites in her country not to publish sensitive information about the war with Iraq. Chief Censor Rachel Dolev sent a letter on Wednesday to "scoop" news sites, instructing editors to seek government permission before publishing information about "materials that could pose a threat to the security of the State of Israel and its residents." Dolev's letter warned the sites, including Rotter.net and Fresh.co.il, not to publish the locations of any missile strikes, information about Israeli Cabinet deliberations or information about Israeli wartime cooperation with other governments such as that of the United States. Israel has ranked poorly in a press-freedoms index created by advocacy group Reporters Without Borders, ranking below the Palestinian National Authority, Zambia and Cambodia. Last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists condemned what it called "attempts by the (Israel Defense Forces) to intimidate the press from covering the IDF's widening military ... read full story / add a comment

Anyone see the BBC news last night? It showed hundreds of school children from the schoolchildren against war group protesting outside the US Embassy in Belfast. It showed them climbing over and tearing down the barriers, boys and girls to get at the US Building. You could see the real anger in their eyes against the war. Then you seen dozens of huge riot police going at them with their batons drawn. These schoolchildren made their voices heard and I hope the trade union people who are rallying today with the schoolchildren take a lesson from them and make sure their voices are heard also. ... read full story / add a comment

Speaking on the Sean Hannity Show on ABC radio today Congressman Pete King said that Bush had shown terrific leadership, had stood up to the French and had shown that the US will not be bound by the endless process of the UN. King said that Bush was committed to winning the war with a minimum loss of AMERICAN life. The Congressman said that anti-war critics, Susan Sarandon and the French were trying to undermine America. He said Bush will achieve a solid victory with a minimum of AMERICAN casualties. King is a close friend of Gerry Adams and has played a key role in assimilating Sinn Fein into the Anglo-American power structure. ... read full story / add a comment
