Around 300 workers and students took part in the 10 minute work stoppage against the war in University College Dublin at Mid-day. As this is outside of term time (so not many students are around) this was a reasonable turnout. Speakers included a couple of academics, the president of the SIPTU UCD section and the incoming Students Union president. At the end a small group left the campus to march into town. ... read full story / add a comment

Why are RTE not showing the Dail debate in full? Why do we need to see Crossroads instead of the most important debate in the Dail for years? I couldn't get a straight answer from them. By Amos Harel, Aluf Benn, Nathan Guttman and Moti Bassok, Haaretz Correspondents U.S. messages passed to Israel early Thursday indicate that American forces are apparently already operating in western Iraq in an effort to head off possible Iraqi Scud missile attacks against Israel. The Bush administration, keen to avert Israeli involvement in the conflict in order to safeguard its fragile coalition, prevent escalation and limit pro-Iraqi identification in the Arab world, has pledged to forestall a repetition of 1991 Gulf war attacks, in which Iraq fired 39 Scud missiles at the Jewish state. ... read full story / add a comment

Its now 10 hours since ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’ was launched. Tomahawk cruise missles fired from stealth bombers rain down on innocents in Baghdad. Our so-called leaders are currently massed in the capital, defending the use of our territory in the bombing of another nation. We are no longer observers. The blood is on our hands. This illegal, immoral & indefensible war has finally begun. Today is Day X. ... read full story / add a comment

Anti-war activists transformed the railway bridge over Strand Road in Dublin last night so it carried an anti-war message. Cut up corriboards were used to create the message 'No US Terror' and these were staple gunned to the bridge. Reported on RTE News yesterday, Bertie Ahern, defended the Irish government's decision to allow US military flights still overfly and refuel here. I want to briefly dispell some of the myths he is relying on to win support from the parliament (Dail Eireann) later today. Speaking on RTÉ's Six One News, Mr Ahern said that he was not prepared to withdraw access to the airport which had existed since 1955. ... read full story / add a comment

UN to have no political power in postwar Iraq By Guy Dinmore and Peronet Despeignes in Washington and Henry,Hamman in Miami Published: March 20 2003 4:00 | Last Updated: March 20 2003 4:00 Statements by US officials have revealed the determination of the Bush administration to exert full and immediate authority over Iraq, while keeping options open in the long term. While the US and UK will seek United Nations endorsement of an "appropriate post-conflict administration", US officials made it clear the UN would have no political authority in postwar Iraq and its role would be mainly humanitarian. "Iraqi democracy will have to be defined by the Iraqi people," Mr Grossman said. Answering a question, he said he hoped that one of the first decisions of a new Iraqi government would be to recognise the state of Israel. ... read full story / add a comment
