Ógra Shinn Féin activist Injured by State car at IMF protest

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday November 22, 2010 00:20author by Sparky - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

Ógra activist Injured by State car at IMF protest

There were scenes of anger at Leinster House today in a protest involving Dublin Sinn Féin members in conjunction with local Ógra members. A sizeable contingent of Sinn Féin and Ógra activists gathered outside Government buildings to coincide with the request by the Fianna Fáil/Green Government for a European and IMF bailout.

After an emergency Cabinet meeting lasting several hours in Dublin and talks with EU states, ministers signed off on plans for the rescue package. Ógra Shinn Féin members picketed Government buildings, while just yards away, IMF officials were dropped off at the local hotel by official state cars.

Eventually, Government ministers were driven to the gates when Sinn Féin and Ógra activists staged a peaceful sit-down protest. A number Gardaí employed heavy handed tactics in an effort to move the protestors, while another Garda motioned for the state cars to continue on their path, with one state car, reportedly that of a Senior Minister running over the leg of a young Ógra Shinn Féin activist. The top of the range state car moved away at high speed down a laneway. An ambulance quickly arrived and the Ógra member was brought to hospital.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Dáithí Byrne criticized both the Government and the Gardaí who interfered with the peaceful sit-down protest;

'Today's developments has created huge anger in this country. We have, effectively, been bought and sold. The government has ran up the white flag of surrender to the IMF/EU who are notorious for their utter contempt for the rights of working class people. Already, within hours, the government is dancing to their tune, with rumours of cuts to the minimum wage and social welfare. Surely we cant be blamed in that context for protesting?'

"The Gardaí dealt with the peaceful protest irresponsibly today. The heavy handed tactics employed effectively resulted in a hit and run incident which seen a dedicated Ógra Shinn Féin activist sustain an injury. The events today, couple with those which took place at the recent national student march, demonstrate the widespread anger but also the low tolerance for peaceful protest."

Here's a song, written 2 minutes after Cowen's press briefing annnouncing the application for the 'loan' from the EU and IMF...

IRELAND NEEDS THE IMF
LIKE ANNE FRANK NEEDED A DRUM KIT
IRELAND NEEDS THE IMF
LIKE GHANDI NEEDED A HAIRCUT
IRELAND NEEDS THE IMF
LIKE THE CHILDREN NEED THE VATICAN

COWEN STOOD THERE
BEFORE THE WORLDS PRESS
DID HIS LEVEL BEST
TO DUELY IMPRESS
HIS SUIT AND HIS TIE
TO SOFTEN THE LIES
BUT HIS FIDGETING HANDS
AS HE SOLD OFF OUR LAND
TOLD US THE TRUTH

CORPORATE TAX
12 PER CENT STAYS INTACT
SOLIDARITY
IS EVERYTHING NOW
LENIHAN TOO
HAD HIS WORDS TO CHOSE
100 BILLION, AND NO MORE (yeah, right!)
AS HE SOLD OFF OUR LAND
OUR CHILDRENS LAND

WHAT WE GIVE TO THE BANKS
THEY PLY AS A TRADE
MAKING MONEY OUT OF MONEY
IN DEVIOUS WAYS
AND WHEN IT GOES WRONG
THEY SING US THIS SONG
AND WE GET TO PAY FOR THE PAPER.

Gates of Leinster House breached by Sinn Fein protestors - article, vids, photos from politico.ie
http://politico.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=ar...d=877

... The protest which began on Kildare Street and continued to the gates on Merrion Row. In attendance was Sinn Fein party member Mary Lou McDonald. Speaking to Politico she said: "We want to make it very clear to the political establishment that they cannot inflict this vicious budget on the people, they cannot bring in the IMF and they cannot bring about this loss of control on our affairs without going to the people."

Asked if she welcomed Minister John Gormley's call for an election in January, Miss McDonald said: "It is very late in the day to be honest. We want them to go to the people now. We want and election and we want it now. There is no need for a delay."

"We want them to publish the 4 year budget plan now. People have to have their say on how we get out of this. The fact that Irish citizens are being asked to pay for this bailout is unacceptable. Those who took a gamble need to face up to it now," she said.

Lyrics

Céad míle fáilte - To the IMF

We hope we meet you on the streets - To fight you to the death.
And we know how you got here - Back room deal and open arms
As you try to suck the life from us - With your structural reforms

They just lit a fuse - It's time for us to choose

You must think we're fucking stupid - Feed our fears with blocks of cheese
It'll take more than dairy products - To keep us on our knees
Don’t talk to us about violence - You hypocritical scum
Just look at all our hospitals - And the homeless on the run
Destitution politics - Death by credit card
By you can't kill the love we have - For justice in our heart

Cos they just lit a fuse - It's time for us to choose

We'll walk as we talk to create – And tear the bullshit down
We gonna build democracy and we'll do it town by town
And it ain't just for the Irish, English, Scottish or the Welsh
Injustice has no border – Our lives before their wealth

Céad míle fáilte - To the IMF
We hope we meet you on the streets - To fight you to the death.
And we know how you got here - Back room deal and open arms
As you try to suck the life from us - With your structural reforms

At a recent 30th Hunger Strike anniversary meeting in Cork one of the speakers openly threatened the life of Richard O'Rawe.

The well known Shinner in reply to a question about Ricky's claims that the leadership allowed six strikers to die for political
advantage completely lost the plot and said.

"Richard O'Rawe is taking his life in his own hands, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was found dead some night.''

When he realised that The audience were totally stunned at this comment, he qualified his remark by saying,

"he wouldn't be surprised if someone came up behind Ricky and hit him with a branch or a iron bar on the back of the head."

The speakers were Sile Darragh, Seanna Walsh, and Leo Greene.
