50,000 opposed 3fold hike of student fees in London

category international | education | news report author Thursday November 11, 2010 11:29author by Londons burning Report this post to the editors

'This is just the beginning'

Britain's seeing its biggest protest yet against the deep cuts the country faces to tackle its massive debts. Yesterday in London over 50,000 students protested against a planned hike in tuition fees which could see them treble to 9-thousand pounds a year. Later things got far more confrontational; students confronted police, entered conservative party HQ, smashed windows, occupied roof, lit fires in streets... Around 50,000 students marched against education cuts in a national DEMOLITION demonstration called by UCU and NUS.

30 Millbank Tory HQ was occupied and protestors took roof:

"We oppose all cuts and we stand in solidarity with public sector workers, and all poor, disabled, elderly and working people. This is only the beginning of the resistance to the destruction of our education system and public services."

Later Parliament Square was occupied (again) by the Open University and on Thursday the campaign against fees and cuts is calling to sign a statement of solidarity with the arrested students and an anti-repression blog has been set up.
