Coastwatch Survey : Gormanstown to Balbriggan

category national | environment | event notice author Friday October 08, 2010 15:46author by No Port Here - Save Bremore Heritage Group Report this post to the editors

Coastline Survey

Coastwatch Ireland are looking for people to survey lines of coastlines for a report to be sent to the EU in December. The survey includes water quality, biodiversity, litter etc and they provide kits and info, plus questionnaires. John Farrelly has agreed to survey the Gormonstown- Ballbriggan Coast line. As it is a long line of coast he is looking for some help. We will be meeting at the Huntsmans Inn car park 1pm Sat 9th Oct where we will have a briefing on requirements etc. All equipment supplied. We will then divide into groups to survey the following:

1. From Gormonstown to the Delvin River
2. From the Delvin River to Bremore
3. From Bremore to Balbriggan.

This could help the cause at Bremore some day and we would learn a thing or two along the way. I am thinking specifically about learning how to monitor the Filter Ponds off the M3 which take the toxic and carcinogenic chemical leach offs (from new roads especially) and which can eventually poison rivers ie. The Gabhra and the Boyne.

Please get in touch if you are interested in becoming involved.

This sort of of objective science-based research that involves the people affected by pollution , and links them up with experts in the field of bio-diversity etc is very important ,not only for the environment but for real democracy , in my opinion.

I'd like to see the model extended to examine the causes and effects of the recent banking crash.

Hi Paula,

Email me and I will send you the survey. It can be done anywhere with just a few people. We were hampered by very high tides on Saturday and went back a few hours later but it was still extremely high so we just managed to get water samples from the Delvin and read through the questionnaire which was very informative and educational. We intend to make this a regular event at Bremore either monthly or bimonthly to monitor litter, pollution, water changes etc.

This particular survey was done all over the EU from Sweden to the Balkans so it was nice to feel a part of something which may have a positive effect on the environment eventually. Many thanks again to John Farrelly for instigating this and we look forward to doing it again shortly, dates to follow.
