Since the Neolithic, there has been a steadily increasing dependence on technology, civilizations' material culture. As Horkheimer and Adorno pointed out, the history of civilization is the history of renunciation. One gets less than one puts in. This is the fraud of technoculture, and the hidden core of domestication: the growing impoverishment of self, society and Earth. Meanwhile, modern subjects hope that somehow the promise of yet more modernity will heal the wounds that afflict them.
Today we experience a deepening crisis in every sphere, which urges us to rethink our acceptance of the most basic social institutions. I include even division of labor and domestication, cornerstones of civilization itself, as in need of problematizing. The absence of fundamental critique would mean that we accept an unfolding, multifaceted disaster as merely inevitable.
None of the claims of modernity/Enlightenment (regarding freedom, reason, the individual) are valid. Modernity is inherently globalizing, massifying, standardizing. The self evident conclusion that an indefinite expansion of productive forces will be fatal deals and final blows to belief in progress.
John Zerzan is an anarchist author and activist, with degrees from Stanford University and San Francisco State University. He first shot into celebrity philosopher status in 1995 after the New York Times featured him in 1995 as a supporter of the Unabomber's anti-technology doctrine. He has since become a leading light of the primitivist movement in the US.
His essays on the origins of civilization and critique of modernity have been collected in Elements of Refusal (1988, 1998), Future Primitive (1994), Running on Emptiness (2002), and Twilight of the Machines 2008
He is co-editor of Questioning Technology, with Alice Carnes (1988, 1991) and Against Civilization (1999, 2005) and hosts the weekly Anarchy radio out of Eugene Oregon
