Douglas Street Community celebrates International Women's Day

Monday 8th March, from 10a.m. to 11:30p.m.

Douglas St., Cork is determined to make a big splash this March 8th and celebrate International Women's Day in style!

There will be a host of events on in various venues on Douglas St., and everything from mother-and-baby activities to inspiring talks from women activists to music and dance to puppet shows to tea ceremonies.

Solidarity Books, Linc, An Crúiscín Lán, Loafers, the South Presentation convent, Bia Blasta and Fionnbarra's are among the participating venues. A full list of events at the various venues will follow soon, once some final speakers & acts have been confirmed.

... and great to see that the celebrations are moving more local while retaining the link to an important international day of protest.

It’s gratifying to see the mature attitude of the organizers in Douglas St; it should be a jollyful day indeed! I was especially pleased to note the South Presentation Convent listed amongst the participating venues for the day’s events. In the past International Women’s Day has too often been billed as an exclusively feminist affair .The organisers’ inclusivity this year has shown that ,for the women of Cork at least , such rigid stereotypes may at last be breaking down. . That is very important because the stereotyping of women has in the past been one of the main obstacles to their empowerment.
(That isn’t to say that the good sisters of the convent are necessarily non-feminist of course.)
