Once a bastion of an evidence-based approach, the BMJ became biased towards lockdown and lost its way, say Carl Heneghan and Tom Jefferson. History will judge that the lack of debate in its pages was a serious error.

Back in March 2020 Toby was among a depressingly select group of journalists who opposed the lockdowns. The other side included his now Spectator Editor Michael Gove, who has let him write about it in this week's magazine.

Lecture by Dr Donal Ó Drisceoil “Framing the Irish Revolution: The Wind that Shakes the Barley.”

category cork | miscellaneous | event notice author Friday January 15, 2010 10:53author by Sarah-Anne Buckley - UCC Historical Societyauthor email sarahanne.buckley at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

On Thursday 21st January, UCC Historical Society will host a screening of the acclaimed 2006 film The Wind that Shakes the Barley. The screening will be from 6.00-8.00pm in Boole 2, University College Cork and will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Donal Ó Drisceoil from 8.00-9.00pm entitled “Framing the Irish Revolution: The Wind that Shakes the Barley”. All are welcome to attend either or both events.

Donal Ó Drisceoil is a lecturer in the Department of History, UCC and was the historical advisor on the Film. Directed by Ken Loach, the film is set during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, the film tells the story of two Co Cork brothers played by Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney, who join the IRA. Widely praised, the film won the Palme D'or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Loach's biggest box office success to date, the film received worldwide acclaim.

"The Wind that Shakes the Barley is a landmark in cinematic representations of the Irish revolutionary period. It widens the frame within which the war of independence and civil war are usually presented to include, for example, the active role of women and organised workers. It gives an insight into how ‘ordinary people’, as well as the ‘great men’, can shape history, and captures the feel and spirit of those turbulent times.”
