Archaeolgy Walk - Gormanstown

category national | environment | event notice author Monday September 21, 2009 16:45author by No Port Here Report this post to the editors

Discover why we should protect this archaeologically rich area from development on this fascinating tour led by local Historian Brendan Mathews. Not only is it a magnificent landscape woven with legend and ancient places of importance but it also boasts an unspoilt stretch of beach, clear waters and is home to varied species of wildlife. Bring the family!

Archaeolgy Walk - Gormanstown

There will be an Archaeology Walk 'n Talk Tour on Sunday 11th Oct of the many Archaeological features in the Gormanstown Co Meath area led by local Historian Brendan Mathews. We will meet in the car park of the Huntsman's Inn at 2pm.

The Huntsman is on the R132 (previously known as the N1). Best directions are:

‘’Take Exit 7 off the M1 (near the North City Hotel) and follow signs for Gormanston and Balbriggan’’ or ‘’Latecomers – come directly to Delvin Bridge on the R132, under the large ‘Fáilte Go Fingal’ sign’’ . We will leave there to begin our Walk 'n Talk no later than 2.15pm beginning with the Delvin Estuary.

All welcome.

A big thank you to Brendan Mathews for leading us through an exploration of our ancient past. It was a real pleasure to listen to him speak so passionately about the land and the archaeology and to have him share his insights with us. It is an honour to meet people like him who care so much about our environment and heritage. We had a lovely group of 25 people so many thanks to all who showed up.

Looking out at the beautiful scenery along the coast it is hard to imagine an immense industrial development of a deep water port stretching a mile out to sea. It is hard to imagine anything destroying the beauty of this place. What right mind could even contemplate doing it?
